This is no post for that part of the red market where the great pros, experienced dp's, big budgets are... Because there is another part of the market. The one I'm in... and the one Jim was aiming at when he wanted to put 35 mm film quality in indies' hands. Some dreamer, Jim is :-)
It's just a post from someone who's been testing his brand new red one through an entire weekend, from surprise to surprise...who's been using in the past the almost complete spectrum of whatever video camera was ever made... who's fought his way through black and white viewfinders, phony ergonomics, narrow dynamic range, grainy blacks, burnt out whites and a whole new gear to purchase for any additional feature. Who never had any opportunity to use a focus puller, a camera assistant and the rest of it, being committed to wildlife docs in rather hostile and uncomfortable environments where assistants are scarce... Someone whot thought : I MUST have been wrong here... what Jannard and all his weirdos claim they've achieved must be some more vaporsomething.
I am no fanatic... my usage is particular... The hardest part of my job with a camera is simply to get my touchy subject in my frame...And when I've got it in my frame, my camera' d better give the best possible image !! (and never would). I've always been asking for a sleep mode... I'm still crying for it (please, Jim....). And why the hell is the light in the screen in the back never to be possibly turned off... some more useless power consumption... Oh, yes, my evf tends to display a strange, jerky image of fast moving objects... I enquired about that.. red team's answer came a few hours following my mail... Issue not quite solved...It sure will be, or... I'll adapt.
Well, to all newbies like me, who've been through this forum reading about red one camera being no beginner's camera, sharp focus a serious issue, dynamic range this (or that)... who have been wondering : is the red one a camera for somebody like me...
Well...this is just good, very good news !
The Red one camera's just incredible, far beyond what you expect. Its ergonomics is about as fantastic as... its weight : a hell to carry on your back, a paradise to move in a smooth camera move... Call it inertia...
Ever used a small digital still camera ? Then you'll navigate through the red one menus almost without an operation guide.. simple, intuitive, straightforward...
Ever used a dslr ?? Taken a look at a rgb curve ? Then you know all you have to know about the alleged trouble in nailing focus, or exposure...Rgb histogram, traffic light and zebras : you'll find in the red one what you've always wanted, plus false color in case you need it.
Ever used a B and W evf ?? Then forget lack of saturation, lack of contrast : you'll find the opportunity of seeing "raw", just what the sensor sees, in the best evf you've ever been using...exactly what you've always been dreaming of...including the possibility to find your subject in the jungle, when color DOES help !
Ever had to mount a sigmonster 300-800mm on your betacam ? The nikon mount will allow that so easily.. and the cmos sensor will give you the image you were used to with your dslr...
Forget about black sun, ir issues... nothing you can't go around. You have never been spoilt with assistants, you had to pull focus by yourself, assemble your camera by yourself ? Welcome to a new world...
Not to speak of the red team's availability...
The red one camera is just incredible. You just have to own one to be convinced/converted. Red has made your dreams come true...
So.. newbies, you people in the lower end of the market... Jim and the red team have been doing to 35 mm film what Henry Ford dit to the car industry... Go get your red one...
Don't kill for it, though...
