I just downloaded the 4K stills from RED.com and I have something to say.
A very wise and successful man once told me that you could hand out free gold to all and somehow you will find those who aren't satisfied. Those who will complain about the purity of the gold or the fact that it hasn't been polished before you gave it away.
I've been out of touch with the RED development in the last few months because of other projects and so seeing these stills and the working camera virtually threw me on my ass.
From the very inception of this camera I thought Jim was basically insane. I knew he'd build one simply because he's Jim but I thought he'd have to compromise a lot but the opposite happened. Specs kept on getting better (120 fps @ 2K, 3 hrs of 4K REDCODE recording, $5K lenses, FCP 4K support, etc, etc.)
Here's the reality check:
For around $20K the world now has a 4K camera with affordable on-board recording! This industry just leaped ahead at least 10 years when it comes to capabilities, performance vs. price, if not more.
Without mentioning Super 35mm sensor, incredibly affordable lenses, modularity, stunning image quality, 120 fps in 2K, etc, etc...
No-one thought it was possible just months ago. People looked at Jim with a blank stare when he mentioned making his own 4K sensor.
It's an incredible feat and a legendary contribution to the craft of filmmaking.
A technical Academy Award worthy contribution.
Not only did they deliver the promised gold but at a purity never seen before...
Now it's our turn - let's go make some movies!!!
