View Full Version : Red Camera Motion

I'm curious to know what the individuals who saw the PJ short think about the motion of the footage. Video has a tendency to streak and blur in a strange and telling way that film doesn't at slow shutterspeeds. If you shoot at 1/48th on any variety of HD and HDV cameras these days you will notice a very distinctive slurring effect on moving objects. I realize this happens in film too, don't dogpile me, it's just very telling with video. The default shutterspeed on most prosumer HDV camcorders seems to be around 1/24th 1/48th and can be rather streaky in a way film is not unless going for a deliberate slow shutter effect. It's just more telling when in the digital world I find. My primary application of the red camera would be to create cinematic content that is photographically on par with 35mm. I find that the motion of people and objects is an important factor in achieving this look. I can't wait to see the PJ clips so I can get a better idea. Hopefully they shot the film at a variety of shutter speeds/shutter angles... maybe not though. I'm curious to know what the priviledged few who have seen red footage think of its motion?

You might want to check out this thread Sunnyjim. I think you missed it by a couple of days or so: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1831

Does red one come with adjustable shutter speed/angle options? (dumb question I know but does it?)

Just watch the clip from > this thread (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1883). The motion rendering is perfect. If you still think this looks like video, there is little one can do to help you

Yes adjustable, just not yet turned on in the protos that PJ used.

I agree Mike. And Graeme, I must say that from what I can tell on the short online clip the motion rendering looks perfect. I no longer believe that we have anything to worry about concerning the electronic shutter if the default 180 degree shutter looks like it does in that clip.

I honestly think it has more to do with the fact you can scrutinize the motion artifacts in front of you on a NLE vs staring at a still frame in a movie theatre.

film at 24fps isn't perfect for motion ...

i find it best to judge "motion" viewing at 24fps NOT single frames ..
