View Full Version : AVID workflow for dummies.....

Okay, I read the step-by-step on avid.com/red and I liked it.

I wanted to post an official thread with my needs for a job I have to do next week with a very short delivery window. Since I have not transcoded .r3d into an AVID codec, i would love someone to give me the AVID for dummies solution for my needs on this particular job. The best way to skin this cat as it were.

I will be shooting a live sports event. I will need to take selected clips from this event and colorize them (in red alert or redcine, my only two options), then export into DNxHD to deliver to an AVID editor. I will only have two days to get this done, and to be honest, I am trying to find the simplest, most fool-proof solution here.

One note is that I will be shooting mostly 2K at 120fps, with a 23.98 base rate. As these are for broadcast, I am assuming they will (at some point) have to be put into 29.97. Do I do this in the conversion part of the workflow, or does the editor do this at the output portion.

Also, there will be no conform. My goal is to get the editor the AVID files that will then be considered the final. No offline here, then conform, then colorize. They will use the clips I give them to go to air. They will want the best quality possible, for broadcast. I am assuming DNxHD codec will be fine.

Man, if they were cutting on Final Cut, I'd be set. I would just export from either REDCine or RedRushes with my color settings to ProRes and deliver that. Done. I am looking for the equivalent solution in AVID-land. Will be great to learn this and get one under my belt actually....

Any advice? thanks.

You do the exact same thing but you deliver DNxHD quicktimes (instead of ProRes) to the Avid editor. You need the new Quicktime component from Avid. I don't know if it has been released as a standalone download yet.

Yeah, I think that Avid needs to update the workflow chart since/if DNxHD quicktimes can now be exported directly out of Redrushes. It makes that first step easier.

can i export DNxHD out of RedRushes without any AVID products on my system? Do I need a standalone codec to do this?

Also, will the DNxHD that RedRushes creates then work in any AVID system?

If so, problem solved....as long as it truly is as simple as doing it for ProRes. Any pitfalls to consider??

Once you get to DNxHD, your client will be able to get into any avid, mac or pc, without having any avid software installed on your mac. You may have to install the stand alone Avid Codecs, which is what I'm trying to find out with my last post on the other thread. Avid Codec pack will let you view all avid codecs right in quicktime. I'm assuming that they are talking about a new codec pack you will have to install, but i'm not sure they have the new one up for stand alone download yet.

Here's what is the latest I was able to find

I'll let you know when I do, I'm sure Micheal will post something about it.

BTW If you had a copy of Avid, you could straight import on a mac via qt ref. I'm not sure about the quality of the import, but it is a very simple way to get into the avid. Once in just give the project and media files to the client and away they go.

You can only create DNxHD 175x out of REDrushes and REDCINE today, that is why it is not listed as the primary workflow at this time.

Hi Michael,

Every time I try to export out of Red Rushes into DNxHD I get a Snowy image. When I try to open up the R3D Proxy in QT and do an export to DNxHD through QTPro all I get is black nothingness... In RedCine I get an export frame error pop-up when I chose DNxHD. So far nothing is working for me for our Avid workflow.

Please help!

Michael,

DnXHD 175 created using Redrushes only create noise.

Given that programs like Rubber Monkey and Cineform allow for 3rd party transcoding of R3D files, I'm surprised SOMEONE hasn't developed a little program to do the same for PCs so that we can transcode directly to any DNxHD flavour we want. REDrushes is Mac only and only provides for one version of DNxHD export. To say nothing of the fact that RedCine (the only PC option) still doesn't support any audio whatsoever. That's disappointing. I'm hoping somebody starts selling a PC transcoding software soon. I'm curious why it hasn't happened yet.

The reason is that PC based applications had to wait for the SDK whereas Mac developers could use the REDline line command and R3D QT component to develop applications. I do know there is development happening for PC since the SDK has been available. Matter of months.

As far as selecting of DNxHD data rate, RED is working on that - the way the apps are built, they don't use the QT movieplayer access to codecs as do Compressor or Squared5, etc. Hopefully that will be available in the near future.

As we look into the SDK, the first place it will be probably be seen is in MetaFuze which is a PC based application that transcode to all DNxHD formats with LUT, aspect ratio control, and metadata.

is the new codec updated in 3.0.5 or is it still off?

It's still off, my thinking it will be posted by Monday. Stay tuned.
