Build 16 and the RED One's black shading calibration is a great step along the way to getting clean images. But it needs to be improved. Shooting high-ISO or long-exposure frames reveals the weaknesses in the calibration routine. Dead pixels reveal themselves in long exposures (e.g. 1fps 360º shutter varispeed). Shooting high-ISO shows pattern noise and vertical lines in shadow areas.
Build 16 has gone a long way to making the noise much more pleasing when you do have to bump the ISO. But there's still fixed pattern noise, which means the calibration could be improved.
I have no experience making cameras... my thought is that having the calibration also run long exposures to pry deeper into the shadow areas during the calibration routine may yield more uniform, clean blacks even as the ISO is raised.
Is there any improvements coming to Build 17 or future builds in this regard?
I love my RED One's... all of 'em. And they're fantastic imaging tools. I just want them to be even better :)
