View Full Version : Spam Police

Of late there's been an increased amount of spam attacks here on REDuser.
:poster_spam: =
One thing we as users can do is
Never, ever, ever follow the link that is mentioned
Do not reply to the messages - that way they are bumped up on the list again, and get even more exposure
Alert the moderators by pushing the little http://www.reduser.net/forum/images/style/buttons/report.gif button that is below the user's name in the post. Here you can report abuse.
Dear Moderators, maybe it is time to enforce some system that needs the first 3 posts from new members to be confirmed?

Hi Martin, thanks for your spam policing. Unfortunately these twits have discovered Reduser. I like your suggestion that no-one respond, so that these posts disappear quickly from the boards.

You should see the porn invasion that has just hit Scarlet User. Unfortunately there is no MOD's around online

Yes, the problem seems to be that all moderators are US based. When they sleep, the spammers can do their havoc.
I would instantly volunteer as a (Euro-time zone based) Spam-Slayer.

You read my mind. Typical sleeping through the invasion. - no anti American comment will be uttered by me!

Good idea, although two posts should be sufficient to weed out automated spam - less work for moderators?

I banned a few new accounts, deleted some posts. looks like one of the other mods cleaned up another bunch.
I like Martin's suggestion, that could be a real step in the right direction. My only concern there is if some lurker who never posts suddenly needs help and makes a post to the help forum, what if no mods are around for a few hours to confirm his post? Probably not a major deal, but could happen.
Martin Weiss
10-01-2008, 07:28 AM
Well, for that we could have a little "lurker forum", where they could just say "hi" and thus get approved.
Maybe there could be a setting that anyone who has been registered for a couple of months, is auto-approved?

How many lurkers are members while lurking?
I didn't create an account on either forum until I wanted to delurk...
Regardless, having first two or three posts verified is probably not a bad idea.
As an alternative, ban posting of pictures to the forums until the user has posted a few text-only posts, pending mod approval?

I think also the idea with the first couple of post getting approval is a good solution, they do it like that on creative cow and i didnīt see any spam there.

Yes, some bot has been spamming Private Message boxes today. I'm afraid the only thing that can be done is to alter the registration procedure. Unfortunately, that always becomes an issue too.
The bot creates an account, spams a couple users, then creates a new acount, spams, wash, rinse, repeat. So When I pull up my email this morning, I see 30 or so reported spammed-PM's. Most all from different randomized user accounts.
I want a good solution to this as much as the rest of you guys do. :)

Well I got one of those too, as I am sure many others did too but never reported it.
Jeff, you ARE the solution. :)

Sad, but true... Sleep? What's that?
People like to complain about spam here. Even with these occasional flare-ups, it's pretty clean on these forums. I think most would be surprised at the amount of crap that gets deleted before anyone ever sees or reports it.
Something has changed with the forum software. I have not heard from Jason or Jarred what's up. But it seems they switched software installations, possibly did a server upgrade or something. Some buttons have reverted to defaults for the software, some smileys have gone missing, etc.. I'm guessing some of the spam protection was lost too. Anyway, all happened at the same time. I'm going to assume they have a handle on whatever is going on at the server end.

Boy am I glad to hear that. I thought the REDUSER taste police had quit.
I have to say though, I've only received this one spam message in all of my time on REDUSER. Not bad at all.
Thanks for being on top of this stuff Jarred.
