I've been using Nikon Glass, but just stumbled upon a a couple of really nice old Canon lenses (Bayonet Style...I believe they are called "FD" mounts... ) and am curious if they'd work with the RED. I've sighted through them on an old AE-1, and they're gorgeous, but I don't know canon cameras/mounts at all, so could really use the help. Will these work with the "Canon" mount?
Thanks in advance,
CK

You need a Canon FD Mount.

No, they won't. You'd need a Canon FD mount. RED used to offer one, but it got canceled early on without ever going into production. Kevin Halverson of Muse Electronics manufactured one, but I'm afraid he's dropped off the radar ever since RED said it voided the warranty, just like the P+S Technik IMS. I have one and it worked great with some of my old Canon FD glass. I was very happy with the results. Once RED stated their warranty policy towards it (and all other such modifications), I removed it, replaced it with the RED sanctioned Nikon F mount and boxed it. I even had a Leica R adapter for it, but never got around to try that. A crying shame, because FD glass is very sharp and has a really nice color to it, which I enjoy. Other guys in the forum have (or had) the Canon FD mount, too. Search and you might even find some sample shots or clips.

The RED FAQ still says they are releasing a Canon FD mount. Love to know if it's true.

Wishful thinking at best. I guess "still" is the key word in that statement. I believe Jim had stated elsewhere that the mount is no longer being developed. A year or so ago. Maybe a month or two more beyond that. A search would reveal his post to that respect.

Thanks... it's a shame though... the glass looks gorgeous.

I plan on making an FD mount for my Birger mount, whenever it arrives. Since the mount is 2 parts, the base section and the smart EF mount section, it appears that one would just have to remove the smart EF mount part and make an FD mount section, that is approx. 2mm shallower for correct FFD, to fit in it's place on the base mount. It's the same way that the smart nikon mount will work on the Birger, yet it needs no electronics so it should be fairly simple to make. We'll see.... I need my damned Birger mount first...
