View Full Version : How can you split a R3D file in multiple R3D files

When shooting larger R3D files, a large part of the content is useless, normally at the beginning and at the end. Is it possible to shorten the file or split it, so you can archive just the good part of the content?

I was just wondering same thing.

Not at this time, from what I understand.

there are some small apps that do this but I have tested them with no joy, keep in mind that RED do not acknowledge and/or support files that might be tampered with by 3rd party application.... read that somewhere

Nope- I would suggest converting to another format. On the Mac I'd make 4K ProRes 4444 and trim that. But the data rates on R3Ds are so relatively low and hard drives and LTO tapes are so cheap compared to say- reshooting a priceless second of footage. I think it's better to save everything you shoot, just in case.

appears nice.......

I've never done this before... You'll have to test it.

In redalert you can set in and out points. Then in clipfinder, check the use RSX in and out checkbox.

I would think that would do it. Sorry I don't have time to test it myself.

Couldn't you just L&T "native" QT's in FCP?

(Don't like L&T... -;) )

Obviously, that would make QT wrapped r3d's, but for Color and FCS that should be pretty much the same thing...

i think jrfilmproduction thinks about something different then just "convert to prores or different format". jrfilmproduction wants something to work with r3d files and to archive those r3d files, but shortened r3d files.

in another words - these r3d files should be somehow "edited", so basically he is asking for a solution to EDIT r3d files. i can see that this solution may be VERY interesting, especially when red ray arrives - you can edit your r3d files, and make your own movie if putting all r3d files one after another to make sequence of your choice.

it must be possible since red itself is generating few files if the file itself is bigger than 2GB. which means they are splitted (somehow edited) in this case...

to Marcus Vasques Osorio - can you name those small applications you tested with "no joy" .

thank you,

filip

There have been MANY requests for this and it was on the "future feature" list at one point but mention of it has all but disappeared. It would be VERY useful as an SDK feature so a FCP plugin could be written to archive the relevant R3D's from a timeline and then generate the proper XML for the media so you can easily (and without making copies of many, many drives) send your edit out for conform and grading at another shop that may be using, say Lustre or Piranha.

I have heard that there were some individuals who sorted this out already for themselves but releasing those tools before the feature officially made it into the SDK may upset some folks, so in the end, till that happens you're not likely to see any movement on this.

That said, it seems a pretty necessary thing. We're shooting a doc now, all on Red, and we're generating hundres of MB of footage daily and I'll tell you, the conform and subsequent archiving of the R3D's to send to the grading suite is going to be a major bitch.

It would also be nice when I get back into the studio at night to be able to pull selects from the footage for editorial. I roll a LOT when I have to get something and there's a real need to trim things up for the editors if we want to streamline post. I can do that in very little time when I'm fresh in from a day of filming. Editorial will otherwise have to sift through miles of footage to pull what they need. I can easily cut that job in half for them if we get this into the SDK.
