[ Since you closed that thread Brook, I must open this new one here (they're there like pop-ups :)) ]

BTW, this sort of extenders over a zoom:

...will give me a full 18-50 --> 36-100 or not?

It will, but it will lose 1 (or a bit more?) stop of light in the process. It´s a cheap way of extending your zoom for a low price, I will get one too!

No worries... I felt bad cutting off your thought anyways. :)

It will indeed Emanuel - it'll lose you 2 stops though, not one (the function is a square, so a 1.4x will lose you 1 stop, 2x 2 stops etc), and may also cost you a little sharpness.

Try to test one out on the specific lens(es) that you are intending to use it on before you buy, if possible, to make sure you are happy with the results, would be my advice...

I spoke with Schneider (Century) at NAB about a PL to PL extender. I want one to use with my RED 300mm f2.8 prime for wildlife and sports shooting. They offer several PL extenders.

Hi,

Remember with an extender you are just magnifying the image. The DOF is based on the original stop but you will require 2 extra stops of light for the exposure

You should wait till you have your camera before buying an extender, there is no way of knowing how well it will work with the Red Camera + Zoom lens.

Good points…

The 2x extender will boost the RED 300mm f2.8 prime to around f5.6. The nature and sports shooting that I’ll do with that setup will be in relatively bright to bright daylight, generally at apertures f5.6 to f8, and sometimes as small as f11.

I will have my camera shortly (RED #8). As detailed in another thread it will also be tested shortly in Los Angeles by a team of professionals, myself included:

We will test the camera extensively with cine, 35mm still, and B4 2/3” HD ENG zoom lenses. I’ll receive my RED 300mm prime with the camera. I have arranged with Schneider to borrow a PL to PL extender. In advance of the L.A. testing I’ll do some stock footage shooting on the coast (Big Sur) of wildlife (whales, sea elephants, sea otters) in 4k REDCODE RAW/24fps, and kiteboarding and surfing in 2k REDCODE RAW/60fps, both using the 2x extender, and without it. We’ll analyze that footage in the L.A. testing. If a demo RED 18-50mm f2.8 zoom is available for our testing, when we do the shooting at L.A. we may quickly test out the 2x extender on RED #8 with the 18-50 zoom.
