Michael & Fellow Avid Users,

I would like to use the new Avid XML Tools provided in Avid.com/red website.

The Resource page says that I need to track and create ALE from the beginning. I already created ALE using MetaCheater and imported media to Avid media Composer 3.0 (Mac OSX).

Is it possible to export XML from Film Scribe and create RedCine XML at this stage?

Why I need 3.0.5 since XML support is their in Version3.0?

Major difference between 3.0.5 vs 3.0?

Thanks for your support and valuable contributions Michael for the forum.

There has been lots of enhancements in the master XML format between 3.0 and 3.0.5 such as all custom metadata. The issue with with REDCINE XML is that there is metadata provided by REDCINE that is used as part of the conform process that is not provided by MetaCheater or REDrushes. One issue for example is if the R3D files move from the first time the ALE was used to where the conform might be done. If the path is different, REDCINE loses the conform.

There are some tools that being created that will take the XML from Avid and re-index the R3D files to solve this problem for REDCINE. It would be nice if REDCINE tool the pull list first, then scanned the R3D files for a relink, but that's not how it works.

Answer to both:

The DNxHD codec for REDrushes and REDCINE has passed QA testing and I will post it on www.avid.com/red on Monday. Keep in mind that both applications only default to 220x/180x/175x (depending on frame rate).

Crimson and "Crimson like" applications being developed to re-index the R3D for a Crimson XML for both Mac and PC. I cannot say more per their request, but they are in progress. Currently the Monkey works quite well and we have a pulllist that prepares the CMX EDL XSLT file for the sequence.

Right now the most straightforward way is created dailies via Metacheater or REDrushes or REDcine, edit and export a CMX EDL into Monkey. If it is a complex sequence, then use the FilmScribe XML to CMX pull list into Monkey and create DPX or if ALE was created on REDcine and the R3D files don't move, use the FilmScribe to REDCINE XML.

Audio is the same as it always has been - OMF/AAF to sound mixer.

just a 30' spot.. no more than 30 cuts.

Any easier having Media Composer on a mac? were a total mac shop but as most editors we use still want to use avid is having it on mac going to be advantages over on pc currently. If it is we may install an offline suite.

Thanks Michael..

Currently there is more flexibility on the Mac due to the fact that RED tools are on the Mac such as the QT R3D component, REDline, etc. If it is a simple 30 cut EDL, you can do this directly as an EDL via Monkey and bypass the FilmScribe XML Pull list process. That works well when you are dealing with layers and lots of VFX.

Update Michael. Monday over across the Globe.

I tried exporting Avid DnXHD after installing 3.0.5 for Mac using Red Rushes. The same old story!

Atlast AvidDnXHD codec worked for me with RedRushes. I don't have any options to change the codec 175 / 220. By default in RedRushes encodes at 175 data rate.

Thanks Michael for the Update.

A lot of these tools are GUI's to the REDline capabilities. becuase that and the R3D QT component do not exist on Windows at this time, the apps don't either. Only solution for Windows is via the SDK.

Also, accessing the different DNxHD data rates is something that RED has to work out within their apps. Since they don't use the same interface as QT Movie Player, it can't and is why applications like Compressor, MPEG Streamclip, After Effects can.
