OK, the bit I never got was why they didn't just get one of the eagles to drop the ring into the volcano in the first place. Seems like it would have saved everybody concerned a lot of bother, all things considered...

Because the Eagles rarely associated with other worldly creatures. They only did when it looked like all else was failing, just like how in the Hobbit they'd only take them so far for fear of being shot at... Still how could Gandalf not have known that Saruman was a baddie... I mean come on, it's Christopher Lee for Pete's sake...

Well then the eagle could have put the ring on -the ring fits all sizes- become corrupted and then they'd never be able to catch the fucker; also being an eagle is much more noticeable than being a Hobbit in the grass so Sauron would have just sent everything he had against a bunch of birds in full sight.

Because the Hobbits were the only ones mentally strong enough and unambitioius enough to resist the rings power, otherwise, yes, just give it to the eagles and fight it out.

But the detractors usually miss things like character development. I read the books.

Q: What's that whirring sound?

A: Oh, that's the sound of a thousand propeller beanies all twirling madly.

: )

Gitcher geek on, full on, fellas!

(Not like I'm one to talk...)

All in good fun,

PS - and Han Solo could TOTALLY take Legolas...

gotta agree with that Mike, though Gimli would annihilate Jar Jar Binks... and no one would be unhappy
