I guess you could title this "a couple of camera guys trying to do audio" but here's the deal. We've just acquired our Red and are about to do a shoot with her the end of next week. We are including the RED shoot (single camera, single shot, one lav, interview) in another shooting itinerary to break her in, and will have to do it without a "real" audio guy. As we've read the threads about audio anomalies, we've decided to record double system. In our naivete, we need help with basic issues. We are shooting RED 2k 2:1, 23.98, redcode 36. We will use a Sound Devices 702T with an alpha mix mixer. The shot will end up in Final Cut Pro for post. We're guessing WAV files are the way to go. From what we've read 48k/29.97NDF sampling. If these are correct, what other settings do we need to know? Also, should we run a timecode cable to/from RED and/or use a slate (don't have a smart slate). Thanks in advance for any help...

When did you get your camera, and what build are you on?

GRayJr works with me at Peachtree Films. We took delivery a little more than a week ago #3375. Build 16 with new audio board.

Make the SD 702T the Timecode master and run a cable from the 702T to the Red. Use time of day time/free run timecode. You don't need need a smart slate just the stick clapping and visual reference.

That's good advice, although you could just record direct to the RED-ONE.

The REV 2 audio boards resolves any issues with levels, noise and and phantom power.

The only remaining operational restriction is seeing the results of on-the-fly level adjustments, but if you set your mic levels at the green/yellow transition on the PPM meter you should be fine.... just leave it be.

Oh, and as always .. test test test....

Stuart and farroutpro...thank you very much for the input. We just today did a test with both onboard and outboard audio recording. Carmine (our Red) performed flawlessly! ....grayjr
