View Full Version : Custom meta data?

I'm at the point where I would *really* like to see the ability to map two keys to meta data indicating a "good take" or an "awesome take" (e.g. 'mark' and 'print'). Is this currently possible? Any plans to make this available?

This could make post workflow really efficient to not have to carry around clipboard, write down the clips names, etc.

Shawn -

One consideration on "in camera" tagging - is when do you do the tagging.

So, you shoot three takes. After the third take, you (or your director) decide take TWO was the best.

Personally, I don't want to alter, in any way, the file on the camera AS RECORDED after I cut. I DO VERY, VERY, VERY much want to add additional meta-data, tags & annotations while shooting.

And while I feel the ultimate approach to this is running an application on a laptop, with DVR playback - and a UI designed for speed and simplicity of tagging - with the ability to simple EXPORT all meta-data (camera data + on-set/non-camera generated data) in an XML -

It would be possible to allow the user, while in PLAYBACK MODE, to select a "rating" by turning the joystick (think 1,2,3,4 stars in Lightroom, etc.) and then the camera would WRITE THE TAG into the digital.magazine.profile - leaving the clip untouched.

But that's a lot of engineering (at least I suspect) for something done so much more elegantly done "off camera" - and in long form narrative work - playback from camera is obviously something you avoid like crazy - as there is usually something more important for the camera (and the camera crew) to be doing than serving as a playback device -

Remember you can MERGE off-camera meta-data with in-camera meta-data using timecode to cross-identify shots - and if RED puts the actual clipname in the userbits - this all gets even easier -

Regardless Shawn, YES - tagging as you shoot is so absolutely logical - one way or the other - it's coming into the process

Mark,
I think we need both. The most extensive beautiful UI way, then a simple "good" or "excellent" quick mark for the small crew (or even loan shooter).

Fair enough - I always forget about those "lone shooter" folks.

But, thinking of those guys camped out in the wilderness shooting bears and such - in that case I think it would be nice to tap a button - or press a trigger - and leave a MARKER.

Then, in playback, you could SKIP TO THE MARKER - just like a DVD, etc.

YEAH - I like that!

I think Stuart just rolled his eyes ... (sorry Stuart - Build 19? 20?)

And for the industrials and other projects with smaller crew (no scripty) and that need faster turnaround time. I did one gig where I went around a factory, two to four takes of every station. The editor had to re-watch every single take just to find the good ones. It'd have been much nicer to tag the good ones as I went.

Yes, but that's one reason why they like you so much: Great idea. OK, so now Stuart's mad at us both!
Ok, for the sake of good grammar, I know it should be "...Stuart's mad at both of us."
