I understand that many of the RED lenses are still work in progress, but I wonder if independent tests can at least be started on the lenses that should now be available either in production form (300mm?) or in pre production form (15-50 CF?). Its nice to 'just have faith', but in business its sensible to be a little more 'hard nosed'

Just one thought too regarding using a smaller area of the sensor. Cooke provides a set of front element mattes for its S4's to overcome flare problems that seem to be most apparent when using their (and other manufactures) 35mm lenses on 16mm format. The signifigant problem was with light sources just, and only just, out of vision when shooting on a smaller 'sensor' than the lenses were originally made for. I wonder if RED will also provide mattes for similar circumstances - ie when shooting using a smaller sensor area?

My understanding and experience on this "ghost flare" as I call it has to do with the combination of the greater image combined with the mechanical shutter of a 16mm camera, and the worst is that you can not see it through the viewfinder i.e. can not correct it on set. The light is bounced of the side of the spinning mirror causing the flare.

See my recent posts about testing RED #8 and a variety of lenses, including RED lenses, in Los Angeles shortly:

Gibby - that sounds great

Just for the record - the cooke S4 S16mm mattes work. I have used them for last 5 weeks on hectic TV drama (S16mm). So it seems it is a lens flare problem, at least in my experience. Would be a shame if same problem emerged with the RED lenses when there may be a simple soloution...
