Have just a couple of posts so far in an experimental blog through blogger. Before going deeper why not see what this community knows on the subject of blogging platforms. The goal for me was to find the best way to put up the highest quality video clip every few weeks or so without having to open up any web design tool.

What is the word on Blogger, Wordpress or Tumblr?

But then the thread might as well talk about all the interesting blogs out there related to our interest in film and technology or to simply post a link to your own blog.

Can recommend wordpress; flexible, you can digg into it and adjust it to your needs. I use it both for blogging and CMS.

Host it yourself. You save yourself from headaches down the road.

I use Apple's iWeb app (part of iLife). Works best if you have an Apple me.com account (.mac).

It looks like Mark L. Pederson of Offhollywood also uses iWeb.

thanks for all the great feedback and links everybody, blownapart's is classic:

"I once had a cat named Red
Who always would land on his head"

so it seems everybody is pretty much voting for wordpress and hosting it yourself - what about design and content - anybody seen any real stylish or informative blogs around the web

FreshDV (http://www.freshdv.com) is built on a self-hosted Wordpress install. IMHO it's the most extensible blogging platform out there, with tons of plugins available and new ones being developed all the time. With a good mySQL host and intelligent caching settings it scales well. The latest version makes updates and administration a cinch.

How important is it to get into the mySQL stuff - I am willing to go down the road a little bit, just hoping it is not as complex as it was learning flash for example.

Is there a good and economic host server to sign up with where a decent size flash or quicktime movie will not be bottlenecked by the host server. I have so far dealt with Verio and Godaddy and feel maybe it is time to move all images and movie files to a new host. Suggestions welcome.

thanks

How important is it to get into the mySQL stuffDon't worry about the MySQL details, just find a decent host that who's DB servers aren't slammed with shared hosting clients. For instance, Dreamhost has brilliant bandwidth plans, but their database servers are horrifically slow. We moved our databases and basic http to MediaTemple (http://tinyurl.com/4jkjng) for that reason. They don't appear to oversell their database hosting as much, and you can upgrade to semi-dedicated database containers if/when traffic gets hot and heavy. However, MediaTemple bandwidth caps are lower, hence our combo hosting solution.

Is there a good and economic host server to sign up with where a decent size flash or quicktime movie will not be bottlenecked by the host server. We've been happy with Dreamhost (http://tinyurl.com/482xym) for purely file storage and bandwidth. Files upload and download fast, and they offer a TON of storage space and bandwidth. Files are clearly not their bottleneck, databases are. If you don't need a db with them, they're fine. Currently we're getting 7 Terabytes of bandwidth monthly, for just $10/mo. That's hard to beat...
