How about posting a 2K h264 version of the entire short? This will give a better idea of the film's overall looks without subjecting individual frames to close scrutiny.
The present plan of posting 1K mjpeg clips + frame grabs hasn't worked too well. The stills are clearly not representative of what the camera can do even *today* since the milk girl scenes (also shot in Redcode RAW) were so much better. Also the limited resolution and running time of the clips are detracting from their potential impact.
I think Silicon Imaging is doing a better job of advertising their camera's capabilities with a clip like http://www.siliconimaging.com/DigitalCinema/Gallery/BossOfGlory_3.wmv

One would think so. But then I'm not sure that RED needs more promotion right now.

I can understand everybody's frustration. I really want to see more as well, even after attending NAB and watching the 4k movie. But as well don't think they need to release anymore more footage. I don't think their has been another prototype camera in the making with as much information released as the RED. Always keep that in mind. That should help ease the pain :sarcasm:

It looks to me ( http://www.red.com/news/view/79 ) like the Red manufacturing capacity is already booked up for most of the year. By that point I'm sure there will be more than enough examples online to look at, of all sorts of subjects, at all sorts of frame rates, shutter angles, light levels, shot by many DPs, using many post workflows.
So I guess releasing early footage has more to do with the Red team sharing the excitement about the camera right now, more than any calculated marketing moves. Just my $0.02

Gah... been lurking (non-posting member) since last NAB, but hey... I gotta say something about the PJ short.
RELEASE IT!
If not for the camera-freaks that would tear apart a 1k or 2k downconversion on sight, then for the moviegoers...
I myself is seated in Piteå, a smallish city in northern sweden... and I and probably quite a bit of the swedish moviegoing population will ever see a 4k screening anytime soon (that is... maybe in a decade or so at least) and after seeing the few seconds that was released of it, and the grabs at 4k, it feels wierd... I sense greatness even in the low-ress of 1k, but I feel cheated if it's going to be a "strictly 4k thing" that only a select few are going to get to see...
Most of the audience I can think of that would be interested in this short doesn't even care about wich camera it's shot with, let alone being in any kind of position to say, I'm not buying the Red, based on this.
Just get it out to the general public. There is a new Peter Jackson flick!
I realize that it's like the old swedish saying "mycket vill ha mer" (much want more), in that the Team (why not get a pimped out van with the lettering "R-Team"?;)) is already more than generous. But the PJ short is too much of a tease!...
just wanted to say that... and from a poor student that only gets to see the stuff you post here and will probably have to wait a few years before getting my hands on anything like 4k in motion... (the film-outs were getting for cinema looks comparable to the recent dvd-screening at the local Bio3an) GREAT WORK!!! Just hope I get to see it in action:D

i don't think red is trying to advertise the pj short. there is still no viewing of it on the website. they were nice enough to provide a few links to the redusers for now. i look at it more as a reward or preview for the reservation holders on reduser.net. the full 12 minutes were screened but that was for all the fans (and press) who got out to nab to support them. there will be more than enough clips in a few months and even then, you'll still have to wait a while before you can get your own redone. too many orders. i think they might have already advertised too much.

The RED Team should do what they think is best, and of course they still have a camera to finish and begin shipping!
That being said, I really loved the 1k clip. I thought it said more then all the 4k frame grabs together.
I think it's the first clip that I can really show to people and say: "look at this!"
Frame grabs are really nice too, but we are all (or mostly) filmmakers here, so seeing the images from the camera in moving form, with music and actors is like seeing it how it's intended, even if it's compressed.
So having an 'only' HD version of the complete movie on the web would be great, I thought the 1k clip gave a much better idea from what the camera's potential is. I loved what I saw so far, and it's difficult to wait for more, although I understand that the RED Team is very busy (it's even a miracle they still post here!).

time to stop smoking the crack.
Never claimed that the SI 2K was better (or even close), if that's what you meant.

Digitalfx — ts1 has respectfully offered his opinion. You clearly have a differing opinion, but all that you've shared are two uncivil and content-free comments. Since you seem to feel strongly about this, you might consider respecting the readers of the board by making specific and constructive posts. In short, if you know something, let us learn from you.

I realize that - I have been lurking on reduser since its inception and used to post on dvxuser before that. Creating excitement for its fan base is what I meant by "advertise", Red certainly doesn't need to market their camera.
Sorry for the confusion.

Watch it, guys. Did you forget to read the rules when you registered? This is your one warning. No personal attacks.

ts1- Sorry, I did not mean to insult you, I was just surprised at your statement that this clip did a better job advertising the camera than Red has done. For all the hype surrounding the Red camera, I think its obvious who has done a better job advertising their camera. The clip you referenced does nothing for me but show bad taste.
I edited my earlier statement.

Here's another suggestion. Make a DVD of the short with behind the scenes footage and commentary by jim & co. I'd buy one!!! I'd buy more than one actually...

Obviously there is some kind of issue with releasing the whole thing, or they probably would have done it.
I am of the opinion that a new test shoot should be done here in California by a very top-level, Oscar-caliber DP, under absolutely ideal conditions, so people will have some perfectly exposed, beautiful 4K stills and 1080p footage to drool over for the next couple of months. This type of test could answer the dynamic range and number of stops questions, instead of this PJ short, which is only adding to the questions, because it was not shot under ideal conditions with a camera functioning perfectly.

HD-DVD/Blu-Ray would be preferable, or at least an option.
SD is sooooo NOT the way to see this footage.

Yes, if Apple would have released an updated version ver of DVD SP to
author and burn Blu-Ray.....
I guess you guys in Hollywood have sources to do that?

As short as it is you could burn it to a standard DVD at HD res and it will play in an HD-DVD player.
But I got a feeling Universal won't clear the music for distribution like this.

Personally, if they did get some clearance from Universal, I think it should only be released in the format of a standard feature trailer. Not HD. That way it would be clear that it's not release quality and wouldn't feed the negative threads that have sprung up on this and other forums.

I guess no one will be satisfied until everybody gets the chance to shot their own footage !.
