you can try talking to the customs guy and see if you can strike a deal. i know this sounds far fetched but not impossible. I know somebody who traveled from Singapore to India and managed to get in 42" LCD, Blue ray player, Nintendo WII, HD Cam (small consumer one) and bunch of other electronics stuff and paid only Rs 1200.

Hey Krishna,
There is no way by which you can avoid the customs duty. But even if you did, you will be in a fix at some point of time.

Anybody who has imported a Red camera with accessories can let me know if (a) there are any agents who would import the stuff for me. (b) the custom formalities in this regard.

a. There are lot of clearing agents and you can contact them based on your location.
b. The customs duty is about 25% of your total bill amount including shipping. The procedure is time taking and tedious but if you have a proper clearing agent he could help you out with all the paper work.

Small thought.
I am a US national going to India for holiday, and I would like to bring a red epic along with a lens, and some AKS. Any one know if I still need to pay this 26%. I have brought a 5d kit and some glass before and no one stopped to ask. That was from Bangkok to Delhi. Any thoughts?

Just pay the official customs handler at the baggage claim $50 USD, he will try to get more from you. Just be firm with your $50 offer. He will mark your luggage, just follow him don't pay until you are out of the airport.

There have a temporary import license for that,u can import cam and accessory, I think that is free of charge, but surely you have to bring it back with you when you going back from India, other wise they will have fine .

It may be considerably cheaper just to buy a ticket and fly it in. One of the many wonderful things about India is that anything can happen. :)

If are taking back the camera after your holidays then you can ask the customs official to endorse it on a letter which you can carry with serial number and details of the equipment and show them when going back ...Do it in case you are asked to and carry all official invoices for your equipments...I hope it helps

As a visitor, I'm wondering if that was corruption or cultural.
What do you think?

I should not have pay any one for taking my Camera with me on a trip to India.
I usually go in and out, I am not importing the camera.
They know it, but they will hold you because you do not want to pay.
I just found that it's unfortunate but what can I do?
Be held up in custom for like 5 hours?
I would rather just follow the norm and go on my way.
You know they say "when in Rome, do what the Roman do".

I do not know from which part of the world you come from ...but I know what our culture is and maybe corruption is a culture in your part of the world.
Secondly if you find our culture unacceptable then do not come here .First you come here , make money and then mix corruption and culture of my country in a public forum...
