Hello, I am preparing for my first beach shoot ever with my Red One down here in Santa Marta, a cool tropical town in Colombia.
The action is going to take place on the actual sand, some kids playing football..err soccer....during the morning hours, some shots are with a steadicam..
Just want to know if some of you can share some tips from previous experiences, in regards of cinematography and camera maintenance (problems with sand, heat)...
thanks for your valuable imput as always!
take care

If it is a windy day, bring along a lot of lens tissue and cleaning fluid, as you will need to clean the lenses before and after every single take.

Take a look at the Burning Man thread for some ideas on sandproofing - though your shoot should be less extreme than that :)

Hot Mirror Pancro or similar if you're planning to add ND...

Elcurado, I believe you mean Infrared "hot mirror" filter, and not "UV", although a UV filter is probably fine too.

The IR radiation effects the sensor more when neutral density is applied, especially over .9ND, if recent posts are to be believed.

Check the Hot Mirror threads that are sticky for more info.

Tents and umbrellas for shade for your cameras and crew. Lots of drinking water too! When shooting on a hot beach the second item that gets set up (tripod is first),is the umbrella.

Also don't go and wipe your lenses before blowing off any sand first. Otherwise you can wind up grinding the sand on your front element. Any filter that can seal your front element will help in this matter.

Hope this helps.

I was on the burning man doc, I was the red tech/DIT and did some camera op, and all I can stress is make sure you have the instant cold packs from wall mart, the ones in the first aid isle. See if you can get a grip to courtesy flag your camera op and camera at all times, that can make a world of difference. Good luck man!

Just returned from the shoot.
It went great. No problems...camera performed flawlessly, no heat issues, fortunately no strong winds were blowing so no sand issues either.
Mostly shot with ND6 and a Chocolate graded filter...
