I just happened to stumble upon Aaton site and my mind is blown away by the new camera they just produced. It shoots super35mm widescreen with super16mm savings and going to bring digital mags for it in few months so u can choose which ever u want to choose with a flick of a button or change of a maqazine? im confused - what? is this dream come true or what?
they coming up with 4k and k mags?
any idea out there is this a good new or good news....

:) I was listening to the DOP who shot some movie on RED and he is ASC member and saw the footage also. what he said was quiet frankly makes sense. All the time he shot with Video camera 2k RED etc was cuz of the budget issues. So film is still the KIng ina way cuz its jsut easy and cost effective to shoot on digital. Its like Oil painting its great but tuff and expensive. so we all go for water colour looking for oil painting. But thats not the right way ...film is film . PERIOD. video is video PEriod! :)
actuallyi own a 435 xtreme with cooke lenses and complete arri package in pakistan. jsut got it 2 years ago still got plastic bags that came with arri :) on the camera all day.
Im sad that Film will be dead. really sad. I was watching taming of the shrew today and no way video is near film and one day after 10 years or so some guy would shoot a film adn it would become a news that wow what a look :)
that would be a sad day

To take this metaphor further, water color paintings are beautiful too, but of course its a different tool. If I want to shoot 2000 ASA i reach for the D3, not for film, because thats the tool to use. Digital will catch up quality wise, but they'll always be a bit different, which is good. I've been waiting for something like the penelope w/ digital back for a while now, it seemed like such a great idea.
However, Hasselblad has been doing something similar for years now with limited success at best. The H system is a complete camera system with film backs for 120 film, and digital backs for digital. Good digital too. 16 bit RAW with 30+ mpxl and (I've been told by people I trust) >13 stops DR. However year after year they loose ground to canon and nikon, and the tide doesn't look like its turning. With so many great film cameras out there 'sitting in plastic', why should anyone buy another?
I'm happy to own a Red, and rent a 235 for the few jobs i need it.

The Aaton is an amazing design. We had it in our booth at CineGear -- it was the only film camera at the show! It is small, lightweight, with a a host of features and a bright and sharp viewfinder that no one else can match. Aaton also has the only progressive scan videotap in the industry, which means that unlike all the others it does not lose half its resolution when the camera rolls.
It is shop-switchable between 2-perf and 3-perf, and there are provisions for a future digital-back. For anyone familiar with the Aaton 35-3, they can forget that design as there is little that travelled to this revolutionary new camera -- and that's a very good thing. Oh, and it runs very quiet. I don't know anyone who has seen the camera that has not been impressed by it.
The first units will roll out to some European clients by the end of the year and we'll be getting them in the States in the Spring. Film is still not dead.

Aaton is the best shoulder film camera I ever worked with, "the cat on the shoulder" is a very elegant and smart product and I love the wooden handgrip. Very french, indeed.

Used Aaton 3s still go for over $100K so I'd guess at least $150K.
