There is a lot of info coming early in November, but I thought until that time I might "leak" some info along the way.
1st piece of news is that the target startup time for both models is... drum roll, please... 2 seconds.
Owning a RED ONE will be of great importance as we move forward.
That's all for now.

So, does that mean ouning two RED ONES will be even more important, or only marginally important. More info please.

Jim will Epic be able to use RED One's EVF and LCD?
My goal behind the question is to get an idea how far beyond Epic's body I will have to go to get where I am currently with my RED. I want Epic, but it's going to hurt, and I don' t expect the economy to be 100% when you roll them out.

2 seconds as in TWO SECONDS !?!
Now why did I buy that Actionproducts swappack for again...
That's fast, way beyond fast. When will we be able to see that at home, or any Scarlet or Epic start up time for that matter ?
Cheers,
Damien

Great news! I think that what Jim is hinting at about the comments about owning a RED One is that they'll take orders from people with RED One's before they take them from the general public. I'm sure it will go from serial order number on the RED One, which is good because it rewards those that believed in RED before it proved itself.

fantastic, only 2 seconds is Great!
"Owning a RED ONE will be of great importance as we move forward."
Does that mean just until we trade in for the EPIC, or would it be beneficial to not trade in the RED ONE?

But we'll be cool if we just have one or two Scarlets right? The "great importance" kinda scares me...

Excellent, thank you. I'm very excited about the upgrade.
Truth be told, it's really pretty amazing isn't it? I am using a RED One and will be able to "sell" it for 100% of it's purchase value a year or more later.
Never in my adult life have I been given a deal like that.
Jim, is there a cut off time to this deal, or does a person who buys a RED one 3 weeks from now still get the upgrade. I would think you cannot do this trade up forever.
Jay
By the way, my RED is symbolic of a chance I took on an unknown company long long ago. It shows me that trusting someone else's dream can pay off.. No matter how good the Epic deal is, it will be very hard for me to let go of my RED

RED ONE owners have priority...
RED ONE owners can trade their R1s in on an Epic for full $17,500 credit. (If you plan on owning an Epic, get your hands on a RED ONE... shoot it for free).
RED ONE owners can keep their R1 and upgrade the sensor for a fee (after Epics are shipping).
RED ONE owners can keep their R1 just as it is.
Lots of options. More when we announce.

Our current EVF and LCDs will work with Epic and Scarlet.
Jim
If you say that the current LCDs and EVF work with Epic Scarlet, will this mean that the $3k pricetag of Scarlet is of the roadmap (I know that was already announced, but we would be surprised  ), since those items would be almost the price of one 'initial priced' Scarlet, or are there going to be cheaper LCDs and EVF specific for the Scarlet to keep it's price around the proposed $3k.
I'm not saying that you're not allowed to do what you want, but Scarlet for $3k was my only hope on replacing my Sony HDR-SR11 for an 'epic' price/performance.
So in short: The first plans for Scarlet were $3k, all in with LCD etc. Is Scarlet still going to be ready to shoot for $3k or should save more money to get started?

A RED ONE can have a sensor upgrade (sometime after Epic ships), but it will NOT have the specs of an Epic. The specs have everything to do with the sensor AND the boards.

2 sec. startup time is outstanding...
very much looking forward to all of the innovations.
i'm getting increasingly attached to my RED ONEs, though, as soon as all the upgrade programs kick in, i may not want to trade in my babies. new battery chargers, new audio boards, new CF modules.
it's kinda like sprucing up your house before you sell, only to decide it's a pretty nice place to live after all.

Dear Jim,

I can see that being good for people seeking to upgrade to EPIC.
But does that mean those of us indy filmmakers, who have been waiting to get involved with all things RED, will have to take a backburner to owning a SCARLET if Red One owners get first dibs to buy 2 or 4 each? (( or 12 if they're a rental house )).
I know I gripe about that point all the time. There are some of us who have been a part of the forums (even silently) since close to day one who can't afford to start off with a RED ONE and all the accessories for our first forays into directing and would hate to be sent to the back of the line on the camera that you guys are building so diligently FOR our type of filmmakers.
I do love what you guys are doing. Wish this level of tech could have happened years ago. But gratefully i'll be able to finally get into that side of filmmaking on my own for once and i'll owe it all to you guys. I've never seen this much company interaction with its clients for R&D and troubleshooting.
Just hate to be stuck at being camera order #6000 at the back of the pack while being first in line from the non-red owners. So if you are going to give RED owners a shot at it, will there be a cap on how many they can order in their first wave so the rest of us can be caught up to by 2010

Same here Wood. I think the SCARLET is going to be the start on a whole new generation of filmmaking. Especially within the industry from various people who haven't been able to afford to get their feet wet before.

Thanks for the reassurance Paul. Just looking forward to getting my paws on that camera. Working up a list of little mini-film ideas to get myself trained on the RED before I tackle my first feature film. So if owning a RED one helps in getting a Scarlet, I guess we'll be seeing a lot of soccer moms donning a RED one pretty soon, just to get a hold of a Scarlet when the time comes. Or are the soccer moms no longer part of the intended audience, now all attention has changed over to hockey moms.
The question of course is: how RED will the lipstick on the pig be when shooting Scarlet?

Jim
You product line still changes pretty fast :) and it changes!
[loud thinking on]
Looking forward to that Scarlet photocamera with high speed filming modes :red_bandana: and interchangeable lense mounts. Amazing work!
Indeed, DSMC feels so intergrated = obsolete now.

Keep going, whereever you aim to change.

User upgradeable would be an amazing development. In field service of the sensor just by swapping it out. The ability not only for RED to provide "modules", but potentially third parties, would be interesting. Cameras can suddenly provide back up parts for one another. That "extra" backup camera would suddenly be a whole slew of backup modules.
Also, assuming that pic does indicate a modular camera. That provides cool flexibility for usage. Being able to put split the sensor from the boards package and put one end on a jib arm and the other at the base ... and a lot of other apps like that would be really handy.

I for one think that Epic will have a time-reverse feature, so that if you've lost your light, Epic will just go backwards in time for 30 minutes and you can get the money shot. Hopefully Epic can come in under $30k, but I won't pay a dime over $50k for the time function, sheesh!

Jim, I'm *very* glad to hear you'll be making sure Epic and Scarlet use the same EVF/LCD, muy bueno. 1st piece of news is that the target startup time for both models is... drum roll, please... 2 seconds.
Jim
2 Seconds? Bah! People will still complain it's too long.
Reminds me of the old joke where this big manufacturing company worked out it would be much cheaper to replace the entire workforce with automated machines.
And before the Outraged Union guys could get a word in, they also announced that it would still be cheaper to not lay anybody off, but to go on paying them the same wages to sit at home do nothing, rather than fighting it out with the unions. All they would have to do is come in on Friday morning to collect their pay packet.
"Waidamminnit! You mean, we gotta come in EVERY Friday?!"
It also reminds me of the advertising spiel from Jim's currently Not-Favorite LCD TV manufacturer.
They keep going on about how their TVs are only about 2 inches thick, not that onscenely bloated 4 inches like everybody else!
Like, have they ever looked at the size of those 32 inch CRT sets people paid thousands of dollars for just a few years ago? And who woulda thought people would say 32 inches was on the small side?

Oh, that's not a bug. That's the new, "user fucked-up", feature.
The Red One/Epic will be able to detect if the operator/owner is one of three types of people. If it does, it time-warps and jump-rewinds back 30 minutes.
Not to say that you're one of those three types of people, Phaz.
It is Beta, right?
