WTF, those were some really cool shots in there. I have yet to get into shooting star timelapse. Are you using the 20Da for those shots or have you moved on to something better. I'm just still hooked on doing cities and some nature stuff. Mainly with clouds at night and stuff like that.
That tracking shot that went with the rotation of the stars was awesome.

Drew, thanks, all shot on my 350D, with the Mumford stepper-motor moco panning head for some shots. I'm going to get the 5Dm2, I think, and start building a serious multi-axis moco rig in the next 30 days. Then spend the winter shooting in Arizona, New Mexico, Death Valley, Southern Utah, etc.
I really need to add some urban stuff to my stock footage. I think the main thing holding me back is the fact that I cannot sit back and drink beer after I get my camera set up in a city... :)

Believe me man, when your down in some parts of the city you don't really want a beer. The game when your down in the nasty parts is called "Threat Assessment".
I have plans to also get some shot in Arizona and Zion Park in the next couple months.

Bingo. I hope I never have to use it or even pull it out. But there have been sometimes that I got really close. Down in Hollywood at 5 in the morning isn't as safe as you would think it to be.

Tom, that footage is truly awesome--awe-inspiring! Watching the plane of the Milky Way move across the sky really is amazingly beautiful and incredibly humbling. I could watch that stuff forever and your music choices really complement the imagery. Thanks for sharing this TL footage with us and I'll gladly be your first customer when you release your first DVD!
Cheers,

DAMN! I wanted to cheer after watching that. Tom's stuff is the shit.
Where is the music from? I was totally into it.

That song is called "Ritual" by Immediate Music. I think it's trailer music - meaning that it was composed and recorded specifically to sell to Hollywood for trailers. It was used in Terrence Malick's The New World theatrical trailer, which is how I came across it.

Cool, I thought it sounded familiar; it was perfect for this. So powerful, and humbling at the same time with the epic visuals.

Tom i might be calling on your timelapse expertise in a couple of weeks if the 5dmkII thing happens - i'm going to try and do some with it if Canon will let me.

Loved Tom, great JOB, as usual, I particularly like the Dead tree shots against the fast moving clouds, love the amount of detail and color range from the tree, clouds and sky composition, also very dramatic your choice of composition and perspective of how you positioned the camera in distance relation with it, again loved!
Great choice on the Music as ell, very E ... motional, currently looking for similar tonalities with Vocals for my first Film " UNCONDITIONAL".

Great job Tom. I love your work.
Question for you - I'm about to convert a whole bunch of RAW timelapse files I shot. Would like to know your workflow (if you don't mind). I want the highest resolution masters (extracted from the raw files), yet work in the same timeline with my RED footage (which will be quicktime proxies). ANy thoughts?
Cheers,
Dale

These days I am doing 100% of my processing in Adobe After Effects. AE can ingest the RAW (.CR2) image sequences directly through the Camera Raw plugin, just as with Photoshop. I do all my color correcting in Camera Raw, make a 4K or 2K or 1080p composition, then render MOVs (usually Photo JPeg at 95% or maybe Jpeg 2000). These renders are of beautiful quality, because they are coming straight off the RAW files.
Once you have rendered out your MOVs, you can drop them into any NLE for editing.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Sometimes AE can be a little daunting if you're not used to it.
Man, I never get tired of your timelapse footage. You always deliver something beautiful.

There are some little islands in the Caribbean and the Pacific where Tom could get some spectacular material.
Tom, can you imagine doing time lapse shots from the surface of the Moon? Wonder how it would turn out...

After sitting in the humid depths of northern Sulawesi I now come back into the concrete of Indonesia with a slow connection. Am off to Japan in a few days so will check it out then. If anything like the previous stuff I am sure I'll be posting again soon.
Any sharks in it ??? hehehe
Cheers Tom,
