View Full Version : still not clear on the 30-80 rouge on the epic

i should have been more specific about the question.

it was not about the epic having a pl mount or not (i figured it would have one) but more of a question about the protrusion on the back of the new angenieux 30-80 dp rouge that keeps it from working with film cameras, would there be any issue with the Epic?

in other words, is the epic going to have some kind of prism or revolving mirror, or something that may not clear that protrusion?

that is my concern here. since, for now, that lens will only work on the RED ONE camera i have now, i did not want to completely paint myself into a corner.

I don't imagine Epic is going to use any sort of mirror assembly - why would they? The Red One has the world's best EVF and with over 4000 sold already, it seems like a winning formula! Why go backwards by adding mechanical parts to an already perfect system?

I would bet hard cash epic will not have an optical viewfinder. Also a couple of days ago JJ has suggested the rouge will be fine on Epic.

Jim already stated that the lens would work and that the EPIC would use the electronic viewfinder.

i agree with everything you are saying here, it's just that my last thread on this question Jim did say something to the effect of "angenieux would work on epic because epic accepted pl mounts among others", and that was not a specific enough answer to my question, so i thought to re-ask it more to the point. if you look at his answer, there is nothing in it that addresses my issue directly, and i wanted a direct answer from somebody at red.

here is what he said in my other thread:

"Epic will have a PL mount (and other options), so your Angenieux purchase is safe."

this, to me, is not specific enough, like maybe he read over the question, and answered a general answer that yes, angenieux lenses work on the epic because it is a pl mount, but i am looking for confirmation that the protrusion in the back of the 30-80 DP rouge is not going to be an issue with the epic, and i would love to get that from someone at RED if possible, so there can be no miss-understanding here.

thanks

I see no reason why the Rouge should be restricted on the Epic. Neither the Red One or the Epic have a mirror so there should be no issue.

The Red Leader is always careful to state that all specs are subject to change. If you are asking the RedUser community for our sense of what issues might arise with using the Epic with other film gear I would be extremely shocked if RED did an about face and added a reflex mirror based optical finder, it just isn't in their DNA.

I read your question carefully... but maybe glossed over my reply. The Rouge 30-80mm zoom works just fine on a RED ONE and will work just fine on an Epic. If you would like me to acknowledge that I fully understand that that lens has a protrusion... I will. Hope that helps.

It works great on a Phantom too!
