Hi,
I have lens set of Nikon lenses;

20mm f2.8
50mm f1.4
85mm f1.8
135mm f2.8
80-200mm f2.8

But i am still wondering if what is the best wideangle or zoom?
So give me your suggestions for the lenses which i do not have!..

17-35mm f2.8. It's awesome. It actually breathes less than my 50mm f1.4 prime.

The best *real* wideangle Nikon mount lens that you can currently get for the Red is the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8f in my opinion. http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/11-16mm.htm

But please be aware that you need the updated Red Nikon mount for this lens. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=17820

17-35 is a great lens. We love it. We've also recently added Nikon's 14mm to the set. Also a sweet lens, but it breaths badly.

For wide angle shots with one of my RED cameras that has a RED Nikon mount , I've been using a Nikon 17-35 f/2.8 when I need a zoom, and Nikon 14mm f/2.8 when I need a prime, both with excellent results. I believe the 14mm is currently Nikon's widest rectilinear lens.

It's my understanding that the new Nikon 14-24 2.8 is the sharpest zoom lens Nikon sells and may in fact be the sharpest wide angle still zoom lens ever made by anyone.

I LOVE the Tokina 11-16mm zoom. That lens is a killer by any measure. I also love the Nikon 10.5 DX fisheye, but for both of these lenses, as noted, you will need the Underdahl Nikon DX mount.

I also have the 17-35 and like it quite well.

What you clearly don't have is the best lens for the RED Nikon ever made. . . the UNBELIEVABLE Nikon 85 f1.4. That lens is, by far, my favorite.

Yep, Tokina 11-16 is great, 17-35 is on the camera a lot, primes when I need the speed and cine style focusing, and the 80-200 to cover the long end zoom. Oh, and an 18-200 when you need an all in one lens when you aren't sure what kind of shots you'll need to get (very slow lens though).

Hi Steve,

Does the 18-200mm hold its sharpness throughout the zoom range. I was thinking of using it for my next doco as the ONLY lens. Is it advisable?

cheers,

did you mean that the iris and focus are not working with dumb nikon mount ? I saw a manual iris ring on the picture (never actually hands on)

another thing...

since it's a DX lens, is still going to cover the sensor when the 4.5k is activated with build 18?

The Tokina 11-16mm does *not* have a manual iris ring. You need the updated dump nikon mount to be able to control the iris with the special knob on the mount. See here: http://www.reduser.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=6845&d=1219169667

This works quite well. The only thing that you have to get used to is, that you do not exactly know which f-stop you are at. But I always use the Red histogram anyway, so for me it is not a problem at all.

There is a normal manual focus ring and it works well with the Redrock Micro follow focus and gears.

Yes, all DX lenses will work with the upcoming 4.5k mode. They fully cover the surround view area on the LCD/Viewfinder which will later be used for the 4.5k mode.

I recently purchased a like new Nikkor 28-70mm zoom f2.8D IF-ED AF lens to use with my Nikon mount. Considering the normal prime package for 35mm is a 25, 50 and 75 mm lens I can work with this zoom as a single prime package. These lenses were built to be used with the Nikon film camera and has a manual focus option and manual iris. The one I found tracks beautifully and there is no breathing when focusing. I’ve had great results with this lens even wide open. Nikon has discontinued manufacturing this lens because the iris is manual, however, the glass on this lens is terrific. I would consider this a great additional to any lens collection.

I have this lens, as well, and it has minimal breathing. . .and, as as bonus, holds focus during a zoom from, say 50mm to 70mm. It's a very fine lens.

I just bought a Nikkor 28-70mm zoom f2.8D IF-ED AF lens. It was very difficult to find one that wasn't pre owned so I bought used and even that was hard to find. I went back and looked at some reviews of this lens from a few years ago and most people raved about it. The only small complaint was that it was heavy. But this was coming from stills guys.

I plan on buying two more- the Nikon 17-35 and the 80-200 and I think with these three zooms I'm pretty well set. Although, I'd love to also have a set of Zeiss ZF primes.

That's definitely a good range of zooms, but keep in mind that your fastest lens is a 2.8. You may run into some situations where you need more stop. But overall, very good collection of lenses.

Haven't tested it thoroughly yet. I just tried one at a photo store. I'll pick one up eventually.

I think you will definitely want a few faster lenses, as well. The 50mm f1.4 is a no-brainer, and the 85 f1.4 is, flat out, the best lens I've ever used. Throw in a reasonably fast wide-angle of some sort (but not the 35mm f1.4, as it is just not a great lens at all) and you'll be able to shoot in pretty low light, as well.

Hi Steve. Yes I am concerned about this too, especially because in most situations I'll be pulling my own focus. If I had to choose 1 all purpose fast prime (Nikon mount) lens, what would you recommend? Others pls chime in.

I'm using the 17-55 DX Nikon. Better range than the 17-35, smaller, lighter, less expensive. Better match for the sensor size of the RED. Also have a 35mm 1.4 prime as go to lens for speed. I'm going to get a 11-16 Tokina too. I think the Zeiss ZFs are excellent but they are twice the money of excellent used Nikons on eBay and they only open up to 2. You do, however, get to say "Zeiss" when producers ask what lenses you have. There's a Sigma 30mm 1.4 that's under $500 new at B and H. Aspherical, could be the best all around normal prime for RED. Haven't tried it, though.

Hi Doug......I am locked into lenses with external exposure rings, at least for now. Your mount looks great and would certainly expand my range of choices but it slipped my mind when I asked RED to attach their Nikon mount before shipping. After reading a few horror stories about stripped screws from those who have tried to remove the mount themselves, I am a little hesitant to try and take it off to replace it with yours.

The 50mm f1.4 is the one to buy if you only have one fast lens. We shot half of a feature with that one lens.

Sam,

Your camera shipped with the torx screws, as long as you have a good key to use on it, you should have no problem. I've swapped our mount out numerous times and have not had an issue yet, just make sure you don't use cheap tools.

I would really like to be able to take the Nikon mount off in situations where I rent the camera out to someone who wants to use PL lenses. Can you take it off and put it on over and over without problems?

I think Doug is right. If you can only get one lens right now go for the Nikkor 17-55 2.8 as it will give you a good range, good speed, and good optics. The 18-200 is a bit too slow for interior work without a ton of lighting.

As for one prime, it would be the 50mm f1.4. I would like to check out the Sigma 30mm 1.4 as that would be closer to a "normal" focal length on Red.

the 17-55 looks great but it is a DX lens with no iris ring and I'm using the plain Nikon mount.

I was thinking the 50 1.4 might be the best prime and it's not too pricey.

Thanks for advice.

I don't think this lens will work with Red, there is no manuel iris control....

If you're on a tight budget I can highly recommend the Nikon 50mm 1.8 too. We shoot almost everything with that lens at the moment. It delivers stunning results (nice bokeh too) and at around 100-150 dollars new, it is very hard to beat.
