Here it is a short and dirty test footage shot on RED1 with Leica Noctilux-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH and also just with a little help from IMS for RED.
As I asked before: "Why all lenses are not like Noctilux 50 mm, fast and sharp in all apertures especially at wide open?" :)
I know it costs a lot, almost a half of the price from Zeiss Master Prime 50 mm (Cine PL lens)
that is about 16.000 EURO compared with Noctilux that is about 8.000 EURO.
Noctilux is much lighter than Master Prime lens and is also one light stop faster(!!!).
Optically and mechanically the lens is almost perfect. I'm just saying that because it was a demo version that I shot with for this test.
All was shot hand-held and at wide open f/0.95. Focus pulling is done on the lens ring with fingers.
Almost no breathing or it's reduced on a minimum just like you would have with the best modern cine lens.
Again Leica Noctilux-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH is an extraordinary lens for any available light shooting on a budget.
All shots processed in RA, ASA 400, Color space: RED Space, Output LUT/gamma: RED Space,
no any CC applied except for the prolog/entry shot with projector that is done in Shake using Baselight/Filmlight plug-in Truelight
Profile: Kodak Vision Premier, Display: rec709, Colour Space: Log.
More about pros and cons another time.
Anyway it's a demo lens.
Requires IMS for RED base and IMS Leica-M mount.

You made the blond woman blush... Not nice to point huge cameras at people. :)
The images this lens produce are sexy!
Were all scenes shot wide open?

is there any Leica M to Nikon mount converter ?
Is it possible in regards of back focus and such ?
What's Leica lens must have ?
thanks,

Impagliazzo,
You are right, the images his lens produce are very sexy!
Beautifull color rendition and 3-D feeling = Leica lens quality.
All shot wide open at f/0.95. That was the test purpose.
Bring with appropriate lens enough light to the RED Mysterium sensor then you do not have problem with DR, latitude,...

Jonas,
I know it's too much light, too much light, ...
One more thing:
From the video at the end you can see that the same movie is running on Mac Book Pro 17".
I was immediately offloading shots to the laptop, fast rendering in RED Rushes and projecting them
on a big screen via MBP DVI out to the brand new Leica 1080p beamer.
People were blown away by the technology and the picture quality from all three, Leica new beamer, Noctilux and RED1.

Julian,
I sill have some leftover files from that Leica gallery event. Give me a little time and I'll do it.
Unfortunetally I had the lens available only for about 45 minutes. It was a demo lens.
Maybe more next year when it will come in shops.

Ketch,
bravo, actually I should be described as a very dangerous guy :)
but I do not like to have any characteristic :).

Hey Sanjin, just a doubt...
Why did you process the RAW as ASA 400?

How hard would it be to convert this lens to pl mount, focus gears etc?

I'm not a lens/optical engineer but I would say that is somehow impossible to convert Leica M lens (register 28.8mm) to Arri PL lens (register 52mm).
Register = distance flange to film or sensor plane.
You can do it only with sort of universal mount that has Leica M included in a set (like me with IMS but also with lost of RED1 warranty).

Speak to Les Bosher. He has converted a Leica R tele for me which is a stunning lens< its was converted to universal and has a Universal to PL adaptor . It really depends on which lens your considering from what Im told.

Leica R to Arri PL could be an easy conversion because the register of Leica R is 47mm and Arri PL is 52mm.

Hey Sanjin,
I have one last question about this lens. What if I mounted it on a lensboard and then used it on a Clairmont Swing/Shift System? Would it cover? I think some of the other lenses in the set are Canons.

I don't know,
but maybe it could be the best way to call Clairmont Camera and ask about the options using their Swing/Shift System.

The images are wonderful. I love comparing other lenses to Lieca and to see what their differences are. :D

Anyone know if the DMSC system is going to provide a Red-supported Leica M mounting option? I sure hope so. I want to mount up my Noctilux too!

I can answer a couple of questions (I think);
As I remember this lens, the rear element comes very close to the film plane, much to close for any SLR or motion picture camera. That is typical of very fast lenses. The f0.7 used on Barry Lyndon (sp?) needed to be pulled out just to rack over the BNC, which had no mirror shutter (hence the rackover).
As the designer of Clairmont's Swing/Shift, you would have the same problem, you can not get the lens past the shutter (without breaking it).

I sent my F1.0 Noctilux to Les about 4/5 years ago to see if it could be adapted for reflex work, not even close
Love to get it working on RED though

Sanjin,
I think I remember you saying you could use the Noctilux with a Canon adapter on the Birger EOS mount.
Thoughts?

The Leica M mount has a much shorter backfocus than the Canon EOS mount, so if there was a adapter, the lens would not focus at infinity.
In my above post about Swing/Shift, I should have said the lens would not go thru the PL mount of the Swing/Shift to reach infinity (but it still would not work on a cine film camera because of the shutter).
I designed the Clairmont S/S and Century's first version, and at the time did not design a Leica adapter, but that was many years ago (hence late night brain fart).

So, the equivalent to a T-Stop number would be...?
(if we suppose that the transmittance is about 50%, the T Number would be 1.8, is that right?. As appears on here: http://www.scarletuser.com/showthread.php?t=882)
anyway, i love to know that optic is "usable" :)
Thanks

Great Tom,
finally you saw it...
There were all part of my bigger Quick & Dirty lens tests...
Also our "Noctitux Blonde" still working there in WestLicht Photo gallery (http://www.westlicht-auction.com/) and she is a nice one...
