Hello all,
Here is another "Red Country Club" thread:
So who got Red reservations in France?
It would also be interesting if the Red team could provide us with the same reservation world map they showed at the LA screening but displaying the number of reservations on each country.

What about a French conection in Paris?
Kristin Stewart
01-11-2007, 09:16 AM
Sure, samsara, a lot of crime is needed here to wake everyone up !
Seriously, I still believe it could be interesting for some people who can't afford a whole Red system to share one (4-5 persons would be ideal). It would be better than owning a full HDV kit, no ? It's a pity to let this kind of gear sleeping in its box while it could be used on others' projects, not to mention the fact that it would give to these persons some help from the others, as eveyrone knows how difficult it is to constitute a good motivated crew here in France.
Anyway, if anyone's interested, even outside France... Europe is quite small, no ?

Slow typing here sorry
What about a new thread called Red in France n° 256713
You bunch of doublecrossers
Seriously,
Kristin you need to be more precise in what you mean by "sharing" the gear.
If it means I would call you if I needed a second Red for a shoot, instead of calling a rent house I think it sounds good, if it's worth it for you and me.
I could really see a kind of network of people standing for each other, but we must give it a some solid basis.
So wich thread do you prefer guys? :)
Yours emmanuel

OK Emmanuel, let's carry on with this thread ! Yes I was thinking of a network. My opinion : knowing how much rental companies here in France overcharge their prices because they're used to deal with producers dealing with State's money, I seriously doubt that, even if the cost of a Red package is very low compared to other brands, they will adjust their prices.
I was more thinking of indie feature/doc/shortfilm work than commercial work. I'm sure we are several readers here who have several features/shortfilms/docs projects. What if we create for instance an association of several filmmakers and we buy together a good Red package ? We could help each other on everyone's projects, just like they did with the Nouvelle Vague ? They succeeded in making their first films because everyone helped the others on their projects. I think we would have a better chance to succeed in our projects this way instead of trying desperately to do it the official way and being more isolated, now that the gear exists.
It's just an idea, maybe you have other ones... I was just think of applying the Red concept to the artistic path of creating movies. If you buy your own gear it will cost you more, you will certainly not use it everyday and you may encounter difficulty to rent it if you don't have a lot of connection.
What do you think, guys ?

Wow, I did not think I would get so many reactions so quick!!
Well, I totally agree about starting a "Red French Connection" (RFC) to team up and share the gear and the clients :o) I mean it'd be great to be able to refer clients we can't take to other true Red spirits!
I also hate to see how some major rental houses in France sometimes outrageoulsy overcharge just because they got some exclusivity on foreign gear.
On my side I will get 2 Reds plus a Zoom Lens.
Let's get more specific as to where you guys are based, if you are setup as a company or as a freelancer.
I work under a small production company in Paris; doing mostly post production work for TV channels and also some corporate films to survive but trying to do short films to spiritually feed our filmmaker desperate souls...

I agree, since it's an english speaking forum I would find quite rude to other users to write in French.
But if you want to speak French here is a thread about the Red on the French forum "Repaire", here is the link:

Hi Arno
We too are doing corporate films, websites, photos and musique for a living, and we like to shoot short films when we get a chance.
We are planning to get a RedOne, RedZoom, Red300mm, and all Red accessories, and if there is any money left, we'd like to get a real cookin' editing platform (mac based) why not a finishing system, we'll see.
Also we are planning to shoot some documentaries, and specialize in shooting surfing action.

I work for several directors as production manager (freelancer). I'm preparing 2 features : one will be shot mid-2007 (director Jean-Charles Wolfarth www.jcwolfarth.com ), the other in 2008, with English actors and crew. We will buy a Red and other gear to complete these two. All indies, hey we don't have a choice when you see which kind of movies are financed in France !
I don't know as nobody reacted to my proposition, but if someone is planning to do some work which requires a longer shooting period than a ponctual one (in this case probably renting would be more useful), we're up to discuss and meet. Unless you prefer to take all the financial risks... :)

Hey Kristin:)
On my part, I've been thinking of all what you said in the first Red in France thread and in this one.
My case is clear, living 4 hours TGV 8 hours drive from Paris, would you like to share a Red with me ?
I won't blame you if you don't. But apart from distance, I have to be honest with you and say that the redOne is a piece of equipment i would have a problem sharing. By that I mean not having one all to myself whenever I feel or have to shoot.
I'm sure you know what it's like in Paris, comes May and June, and every body start to shoot like crazies, what happen then if you have to share the Red between 5,6,7 shorts over a couple weeks. Shedulding one project is hard enough not to have to share a camera between to many projects.
Of course we could save some money by buying one Red between us all, but at one point some of us will either start loosing serious money (by not beeing able to shoot comercial projects) or loosing their mental sanity (by not beeing allowed to shoot their next blockbuster feature).
Still I see what you mean, and I don't intend to discourage anybody from following this course, but I owe you an explication why I didn't exactly jump on your wagon in the first place.
Yours Emmanuel

Hi Emmanuel (and others !)
Thanks for your thoughts ! Of course I understand your position and you're right about the planning thing. Our case : we will probably use the Red one only for about 2 months per year (maximum). And I think it's a pity to let this camera in its box for the rest of the year. We firstly thought of renting the package the other months, but it requires a lot of worries as this gear is probably more fragile than a 35mm camera and it will be hard to touch the right persons who might be interested. It's like a car, it may be more clever to share it with careful persons. Another problem : the difficulty of making a professional network in France, as the profession isn't as structured as in the USA for instance (it's hard to touch a specific profession).
Indie movies which require a long period of shooting (more than 10 days) are very difficult to organize : technicians who aren't usually paid aren't very reliable (of course it's understable, they need money to live like everyone). And now that Red exists, it allows indies to have the same quality as pros. But indies will still face the problem of the crew for their artistic projects (features, shortfilms and docs). That's why we thought maybe sharing some gear could be useful.
Look at the prices at ww.indierentals.com . For one month the body will be at $5000. The professional rental companies in France will probably be even more expensive.
Not having the camera with us isn't a problem for us, even if you were in Berlin or Roma. I think it's a matter of organization, if we see in the future that we all have big schedule, there's always the possibility to give the camera to someone specific at a still interesting price. And in 1 year or 2, probably there will be a Red 2, or other brands...
I don't know, maybe it would be interesting to discuss together of our respective projects. Please contact directly Jean-Charles at production@jcwolfarth.com , he's more technical than me !
Cheers,
Kristin

Great ! All the people interested by a meeting in Paris, discussing about our respective Red projects and the way we could help each others, please email your contact info to production@jcwolfarth.com , we're trying to organize something (the soonest is the best).
Everyone is welcomed (dops, directors, producers, actors...) from whereever you live (countryside, Belgium, UK, Germany, etc, as nowadays train and low-cost planes make everything nearer !). If you're hesitating placing an order, looking to work on some Red projects, this is an opportunity !
See you soon,

PS : for practical reasons, please send us your contact info by email, we need to know how much we will be to book a place and determine the date, as some people are travelling. Thanks !

besides your meeting, I want to invite you all to the TEA (www.digitea.es website coming soon in english and french coming soon), the spanish HD meeting that takes place every year in Zaragoza Spain (closer to france!).
It's going to be on june 23th, and every year comes some of the most important people related to HD worldwide to held free workshops and conferences...
Right now a rental house which has 2 (reservation) reds have offered the chance to give a workshop with the camera. Last year we did that with the arri d20 with bill lovell from arri and a thomson viper with David Stump (hopefully we want to invite the red crew!)
So, with cheap flights coming to spain from france (well, and netherlands, belgium, italy...), maybe we can do the first Red european meeting.
We'll pay the drinks!

Well the meeting with JC was quite interesting, and I think that with the extra reservation session a lot of people got into the RedBuzz here in France.
I even went with a third reservation myself; it starts to feel like playing the lottery, maybe Jim should pick a winner among all the reservations, somebody who gets a free RedRaid or something.
I guess the sad part comes when we'll have to actually bring up front all the money to pay for these babies!!
Anyway, I'm happy to see that the EU Red Network is taking shape. A trip to Spain would indeed be fun. But it's true that waiting for the Red to actually come out could be a good thing.
And by the way, welcome to all the new Redservations made in France and Europe in the last session, feel free to come forward and share who you are with us. I think this network could grow into a nice indie community as we talked about it before but the more we know each other the better it will be.

He he, things are getting alive ! We've just started the preproduction of Jean-Charles Wolfarth's next feature. We finally decided not to take a reservation, as the shooting is scheduled for mid-september (during 4 weeks in France) and it wasn't sure to get the camera at time. We considered renting one instead. So if you're a future Red owner interested in contributing to this project (a story set in the 1910s with vintage cars) as a DP/cameraman, contact us at production@jcwolfarth.com , we'll see if we can trade something ! European/Outside Europe people welcomed too !

Part of my plan was to rent the red out for independent film. I am supposed to get mine sometime in September (according to red.com).
Maybe theres interest, if so - let me know. I am not a DP myself, I am coming from postpro. I will have access to more or less all necessary accessories, maybe a nice set of PL prime lenses and know cameramen incl. steadycam ops.
Maybe theres interest too in helping you getting the stuff cc'ed or a film-out.
Let me know, I am happy to help.

Hello
(this is my first post)
I am an owner of a small production company which mostly make commercial spots and some documentaries. I want to buy Red One and change a little profile of my activity, to start to be a producer of low and middle-budget features. I do not have too much experience about working on features, rather doing commercials and docs.
There is not too much feature producing in Poland; first are high-budget projects, the second are low-budget HDV amateur films. I can see a space for good preparing projects which are based on Red 4K system.
I want to build the production studio with Red & FCP workstation for completely preparing all budget films in High Definiton and feature films as well.
I want to make contact with people in Europe, especially in France, maybe there is possible any co-operation.
I will be on IBC, I think at Monday and Tuesday 10-11 Sept; then possible that I will go to Paris for some days.
Regards.

Hello there !
I'm not a futur Red owner, or not yet. But I'm very interested on that camera.
I would like to shot my next music video with. This is a produced music video, and rather than use a Sony 900 or Panasonic Varicam, I would like to try the Red.
Do you know where I could find a Red One in 2 mounth in France ? TSF ?
Thank you.

Hi Kristin,
I am agree with your words.too seriously indie Film makers are have to limited budget than others.

:cold:

02-19-2008, 09:34 AM
Hi, I was there last saturday. Pretty interesting... Too many people I thought, surprisingly enough... I'd like snobish meetings with Red owners to have a more personnal thorough presentation and manage expectations... I know this is about digital democracy, but some of us are into real Red life now, and have less interest with the curious and excited crowd... We are going to face real issues, besides the fun of having a camera and shoot... Support and service is becoming a key point for us. I support the excitement, being a paying pionneer, but my investment is real and goes beyond students curiosity... Is locared thinking about red owners, being the 1st company to place itself among Red technical experts in France? Or will we have to open a Frequent Flyer Fedex account to have our gear serviced in California all the time? Not that I think it's unreliable, but it's a bit like buying a car in a foreign country... It's an important issue...

The Red Drive, EVF and other elements will be taxed at higher import rates.
If you want to be safe count 8% average for your entire package plus VAT 19,6%.
Steven-Marc C.
03-11-2008, 03:22 AM
Apparently most EU-based Red owners have not had to pay any duties on the camera body itself as it is declared in the DSLR category which incurs 0% duty for EU import from the US. Lenses are 6,7% and the rest of the accessories are around 3-5%.
It seems important to make sure that FedEx declares the camera body with the 8525.80.30 TARIC code to make sure it will not be taxed.
RED had previously posted the following Schedule B codes with which the camera and accessories are shipped:
One- 8525.80.5050
300mm f2.8 Lens- 9002.11.9000
18-50 T3 Zoom Lens- 9002.11.9000
EVF- 8528.72.6057
LCD- 8531.20.0020
Power Pack- 8507.80.0000
Drive (Raid)- 8471.70.9000
Base Production Pack- 7616.99.5060
B4 to PL Adapter- 9002.11.9000

Arno, your RED Bootcamp is a good idea. I couldn't find it on your site until I went to the english version...
And why doing all courses in english? It's a litle sad... being in our lovely capitale and don't speak french. :sarcasm:
By the way, here is a not less lovely forum which speaks our old good french language : it's called www.madeinred.fr (http://www.madeinred.fr) and it's for all things around working with RED's cameras, shooting, post, grading, etc...

Welcome Lionel, good to see slowly and slowly the French industry consider the red technology
By the way I don't think you're the thirst one in south of France.
Best regards

Brice,
Thank for your kind support.
Sure, we're not the first company to own Red One's in south of France, that's not the matter :)
Paris is leading the post-indutry and we offer now an alternative in the south of France, in front of the sea, that was my thought.
It's now possible to capture, grade, FX, mix and go HDCAM SR in Marseille. We're a small and independant company and it was really hard to complete this project in this financial mood, i was just happy to tell it.
We do not want to lead anything, just make a good job with good people :)

Hello French Red,
We are producing content in the Cote d'Azur region and hope to get are hands on a Scarlet or two as soon as possible.
If you guys organize a meeting please count us in. On the other hand, if enough of you are coming this way for the Cannes Film Festival or MipTV then maybe I could pull together a dinner and some work space to hang out and talk shop.
Thanks and I hope to meet soon.
