I would like to back up in the field with a PC and verify takes with the proxies (either directly or in premier pro). Does this work now? If not, when will it work?

I would love to know this, too.

If apple has it's say, and Quicktime is an Apple product, I'd say NEVER!

Red has to support both PC and Mac in the future and it will be a major drawback if they didn't support PC as much as Mac in the end.

An obvious solution would be for Red to allow in camera choice of QT or AVI proxies.

Quicktimes already open in Premiere on a PC. So it's only the lack of a .r3d Quicktime codec, that Red has so far only provided for the Mac platform, that prevents it working on a PC, unless I just don't understand how this works.
The part that puzzles me most is that nearly all the Red-provided software requires and Intel Mac. That's basically a PC running OSX. So why is it taking so long to have a PC version of RedAlert! for example?

This should have been taken care of long ago. Since it hasn't, I assume it isn't going to happen. My suggestion is to buy a Mac and bow at the altar of Jobs. amen

That's a heck of an assumption. I wouldn't bet against Red on this. I am just puzzled by the delay. I'm sure Red have their reasons (maybe just too busy to revisit right now) but it sure would help us PCers out a lot if they gave us a codec too.
FYI, I have nothing against the Mac. I think they're great machines. I am only PC-centric as I come from an engineering background and there's precious little engineering software written for the Mac compared to the PC. The thing is, the Adobe workflow is right around the corner (please!) and right now, I'd rather spend my money on cine gear, not more computers.

I really don't think this has anything to do with Red. I think it's all Apple. I could be wrong. This is gonna be a larger problem when Red releases a cheaper more accessible camera. There will be a lot of complaining from the PC crowd out there who just want to play back a QT ref file on their platform of choice. This really should be a non issue by now.
Chris
I have a dream. A dream of importing QT ref files into my PC Avid without having to go into RedCine until I'm conforming. Why can't I do this already!?
Only "The Shadow" knows!

We are about to have an explosion of Red product out their due to Scarlet. Can we please get a response from someone from Red as to when we can view quicktime proxies on a PC?

Maybe I am missing something, but why do you want to be able to look at the proxies. It seems to me that it would be much better to be able to view the R3D files directly. Wouldn't the proxies jus be a temporary solution to allow the files to play in QT compatible programs until R3D is supported natively. Do the proxies provide some advantage I am unaware of? (That is not necessarily meant to be a sarcastic or rhetorical question)

Primary use for proxies is shot review on set including audio
