i was recently at Camtec in north hollywood when they received their 5th red. they opened all the boxes and took all the gear out and put it all into their customized hard cases.

what was left over were literally 50 boxes, small and large that held all the various bits and pieces from red.

so the idea is, and it may have already been said here, if so, cool and sorry for reiterating, but if not, here goes...

what about shipping back the empty boxes to red and having them reuse them.

if red was smart and i know they are, they would reciprocate with some sort of a credit or present for doing so...it would save them money, you the hassle of throwing all the boxes out and more importantly help save a tree or two.

now i am no lefty environmental zealot, although i do drive a prius as does my wife, but i am from NH where we have the second largest number of trees per capita, second to washington state, so i like trees and it would be a good thing....

good luck with your new cameras.

Very nice idea.
Lets see if Red response to it.
For years I have been watching companies and corp trashing the world for profits. I doubt if that changes.

Well said Dino. I agree...

Red does a great job at packing all the gear to keep it safe in shipping, but I think it's a crime to just throw away all that packing material when it can definitely be re-usued.

Hmmm... although i like the idea, i wonder what it would cost to ship them all. you know gas wise... it might be better to get it all shipped in the red case to save at least a few boxes. or just recycle them. not an environmentalist by any means. just thinking is all.

Don't forget: Sending back REDthings over continents and thinking to save trees is not really a good idea, because of the pollution etc. You will loose more trees than you win, I guess.

I kept all my boxes and will reuse some of them when I send stuff here and there.

I like the idea. I think in the US alone the cost of sending boxes back to Red would have minimal impact in pollution. Those planes/trucks will be flying/driving with or without these boxes. Sure it would take up space from other items that could be shipped but most of those boxes can fit in one of the standard large boxes. It's super super light as well. I bet it would cost more to the environment to recycle than to just send them back to Red for reuse. keep in mind that trucks have to pick up the boxes for recycling. Reuse is most always better.

And I would admit to being an environmentalist even though I'm not a super spaz about it. Ain't nothing wrong with minimizing waste. Be green as you can be, baby.

I am glad I saved some of my boxes, because I have to ship things back for upgrades (iPins, audio board, etc.)

Did exactly the same!
In fact, we started feeding our neighbor chickens with all the waste from carrots, apples potatoes etc. At the supermarket we use canvas bags and not even one nylon bag and we even found it easier to pack.

I killed my boxes...

Wrong move in the long term...

I've kept all my boxes so far. I figure some of them like the camera box and foam can be used to return the camera for upgrades or whatever. I'll store the rest of the boxes for the time being. I figure that someday they will get re-used to ship many of the parts again to somewhere.
