It really makes one wonder, if this kind of revolutionary change in the world of photography is possible.... what have the "big boys" (Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc...) been doing all these years?

Scarlet will be the new Red One. Scarlet will have full Red One capabilities. Plus.
At Scarlet prices.
And Epic will be available free to Red One customers as a swap.
And we shall all be gods.
And Jim will then give everyone Imax quality Scarlets, Epic, Ones for free.
And all our money back because he's simply crazy and is love.
And he will look down on the world and see that it is good.
Red is the black monolith from 2001, but with better design.

My wildest speculations:
Scarlet and Epic share the same guts - it's the glass and modular add-ons that differentiate the price points.
Scarlet will be capable of higher resolutions/speeds/whatever through upgradeable firmware for a price. So you can turn a Scarlet into an Epic over time as your budget allows.
For the record, I love Audi buttons and miss my Audi :(

Ah, this forum is so much fun. I mean, despite all the teasing by Jim & Co, this is what RED makes possible:
I'm sitting here, doing an indie DI (by myself, with desktop tools). I've been working from 8PM to 8AM, all week, pulling all nighters so I can get free access to a bunch of idle Mac Pro's. I'm onlining my 3.5 year passion project on Rwanda that started shooting on the DVX. My nighttime project is up-ressing all the old & archival footage to match this beautiful image-making machine, the RED.
Thanks to RED, this little passion project has thousands of moving images like the attached still. As a director I have the imaging power in my hands to tell the story about this little, forgotten place even though my show has no money.
And in the daytime, I make money renting Red's to big network shows like Scifi's Sanctuary, commercials and all that... showing other filmmakers how to use this powerful tool. The same tool empowers everybody on that chain.
The RED One is just the beginning. I can't wait to see what Jim's got up his sleeve.

Jim, you've already delivered more than I could have ever dreamed...
So what we need is bigger dreams. I'm going backwards to move forward...
What made the Lumiere Bros. Cinematographe the most exportable imaging technology on the planet, at the time, was a camera that could then be converted on-the-spot into a projector, rolled in one. Separate units were not required. So the operator could shoot and deliver in the same day.
So I'm going with...SCARLET - recording device only, EPIC will roll RED-RAY into a modular system that will somehow allow us to shoot and deliver 2K or higher in a single upgradeable package.
So we can all become 19th-century itinerant magic lantern wielding impresarios for a new age.
If Jim is really talking about a paradigm-busting shift equal to or greater than RED ONE, it is going to be something far more interesting, more revolutionizing, than more resolution or interchangeable lens mounts on a SCARLET. Those will be givens, because we already know they can. Canon/Nikon can up these antes, as can RED, and Sony, etc. for that matter, so it has to be something else. Something that breaks the escalating pattern of offering more...
Something the "other guys" can't/won't offer us is delivery. That's something that will unlock the potential of the cameras. And the modularity of EPIC could certainly permit a complete re-think of the camera as an acquisition-only device. How cool would that be?

I need to thank Canon and Nikon for lighting a (small) fire under Jim's ass.
The fact that they released all the video features seems like it was what was needed to get interchangeable lenses on the scarlet :) I for one, was one of the people who was vocal about needing interchangeable lenses on this baby. Of course I could be wrong but I think at this point it's safe to say it will include this. My guess is probably a RED lens mount for a new line of lenses, which will be nice and suck at the same time.

I'm thinking too this could mean that the Scarlet and EPIC both use the same detachable control panels; but another possibility is that the two renders are from two different cameras: if you look more closely, Jim posted this one here and the other one there (it is the users who mixed them together), and they are not quite the same...

Just my six cents:
- Hopefully it has the form factor of a movie camera and not an SLR.
- Wireless networking built in to supply video-village with its picture
- Wireless also allows camera control / sync (4 scarlets auto-sync to create a single 4x frame!)
- Sensor is now full-sized - EPIC's is 120mm
- Built-in HD monitor
- Hot-swappable 250 Gig RAID-10 storage cards
- Easy way to add production meta-data to shots
- Instant-on
- Variable frame rate: from weekly to 300 fps
- GPS and Accelerometers transmit motion-capture data to new RED robotic SteadiCam (which can then repeat the path)
- Monitor provides a touch-sensitive menu i/f
- No matter how it's mounted, the image is always upright
- Lens is 4mm - 220mm, f1.6, and doesn't breathe when zooming
- Anamorphic option
OK, I could probably do this all day so I better stop now.
Thanks to RED, as always, for giving us 21st century stuff *in* the 21st century, and for keeping the sales hype honest.

Hi Michael,
Red One was priced at $17500, one would expect computer equipment to halve in cost every 18 months so $10,000 next year is not that out of line. Also Red have sold 10 times the no of cameras they expected to do, with econony of scale it should be quite possible to be $5000.

Meryem, about the Lumičre Brothers thing : sure, from a technical point of view, using the same box to record and project the pictures was impressive. But the real surprise was to see moving pictures... It was a long time ago, but I remember quite clearly : in this small room on the Grands Boulevards in Paris, some spectators even jumped from their seats to keep out of the train's way... the arrival of the train at the Ciotat...

Hi Michael,
Red One was priced at $17500, one would expect computer equipment to halve in cost every 18 months so...
I don't expect this... there is the transistor count doubling trend observations of others and there is my experience of buying high end workstations for over 10 years. Neither lead me to infer your statement and counter intuitively apply it to a cinema camera
Also Red have sold 10 times the no of cameras they expected to do...
I'd bet Jim ambitions are far greater than you are suggesting.
...with econony of scale it should be quite possible to be $5000.
I'm sure he can make a cinema camera for $5000. But why would you make a PL mount camera for less than a good set of diopters ??
A fully kitted out scarlet for 5k sound great to me.. I'll take 2 straight away.
One of my frustrations with our Reds IS the economy of scale consequences. I just don't want to encourage more. A proper design stage producing a beautifully cut body with a perfectly thermally modelled mount would cost as much as you want to pay for a whole cinema camera??
I'd also like Red to invest in serious R&D.. You? And I don't mind them making a good profit. you?
I personally hope Epic is not compromised (like his 18-50, most of the accessories and some aspects of Red one) by cheapness.
And I say this as someone without deep pockets or a hire business to justify my spending.
Once post is finally sorted out it would be great to have no more well justified moans.
I want a digital 435/Penelope rolled into a revolution continuing product.

Reading these posts today has caused me to have a great day. I have no idea what jim plans. He has made so many little comments here and there. I love my brand new red one. I wish that it was even possible to consider picking up an epic. but unless the trade in value on the one happens to be equal to the cost of the epic its not likely to happen. Regardless, I am thoroughly enjoying the speculation. Jim, you are clearly the master of viral marketing. I keep hearing all this talk about how Red's marketing machine is more than their cameras are capable of. but considering your marketing machine is us, the owners, clearly you have done a fantastic job.
okay, my speculation:
Red one upgraded to an epic at a price
however, i also think that there will be some kind of modular replacement for red one owners rather than an outright swap.

Hi Michael,
I enjoy shooting with whatever camera is most suitable for the job in hand. Having shot 35mm, Red, Digtal Betacam & HVX200 in the last 4 weeks, horses for cources.
I have no reason to play a baiting game. I don't remember mentioning that the markets would fall 40% this year, that would have been a baiting game for many billionairs 12 months ago.

HVX200 was released December 05.
I cant remember exactly but i think 5500-6000 was the price for that camera.
BH has it for about 5100
(the reason these drop in price is because there are many resellers who fight for competition)
by your theory. an HVX would be going new for...
750-1000 bucks?

I don't expect this... there is the transistor count doubling trend observations of others and there is my experience of buying high end workstations for over 10 years. Neither lead me to infer your statement and counter intuitively apply it to a cinema camera.
With the boundary between computer and communications-type chips and devices blurring, the price-falloff-model perhaps needs to be reevaluated. Sharp declines in semiconductor prices are largely responsible for observed declines in computer prices. Communications devices also have a large semiconductor content, but their prices do not fall nearly as fast as computer prices. Many times, these differences are large enough to potentially explain all of the output price differences.
Some studies have suggested that the lack of “convergence” in quality adjusted price trends between computers and communications may have been due in large part to regulatory factors. However, with the breakup of Bell Systems, and deregulation of communication markets sometime ago, and rapid growth in unregulated data communications and networking markets, the regulatory inference seems less plausible.
I'm sure he can make a cinema camera for $5000.
Based upon what I have seen, a price range in to $5000-10,000 seems possible. On the other hand, Epic has been rumored to be in the $30,000-40,000 range. I would tend to think that Jim Jannard would like to do his best to bring the cost down as much as possible, and is certainly helped by direct sales from his own outfit.
However, I have never been able to reconcile why there is a difference.

Hi Zakaree,
HVX seems like a very old camera now, I would not want to pay more than $1000 for one today. Far better cameras are available today for $6000.

This is my speculation as to what has happened...
I believe that the two renders we were shown were not either camera, but the Smart Handle that can attach to both for stills and whatever else you can use it for. That is why he asked us how we know that we haven't seen the Epic either. OR it could just be the plate on the back of both cameras. Ha. I still think that its the Smart Handle but now has much more purpose and can attach to both cams.
I also think that this Smart Handle has taken over the DSMC. The reason there is no more DSMC is because they figured out a way to make both EPIC and SCARLET DSMC's and thanks to this Smart Handle they don't have to worry about making another camera...they can focus on making the ones they are already working on.
How sweet would that be? Anyone think I am anywhere close?

Well this seems to be exciting! After lurking around for the past couple of months I signed up. Hoping to beat the rush before the announcement.
I've been watching the various videos from the Canon 5dMark2. I'm really liking what I see for the price but the jury is still out. Because of Red. I'm pretty stoked to see what Red provides. C'mon Jim! I just hope I can afford it. I'm tired of trying to shoot with crappy lenses and tiny sensors. I've dreamed of this day for a few years know. Can't wait to see what comes of it.

yes i agree on the merge of DSMC and Scarlet especially since jim jas taken the stance of "Whats a DSMC?"
That seems rather obvious, though, don't you think? Definitely SCARLET and EPIC are being collapsed in some way, the Smart Handle theory seems likely. But I am guessing that is just the tip of the iceberg, that's the jack in his hand, and there is at least a pair of aces in there somewhere.
But Jim already alluded to that, and he is very clear that we should be prepared for surprises and for that "scam" word to be kicked around -- I would be surprised that, with degree of excitement/hype, if all that he is doing is competing with new releases from Canon and Nikon by one-upping the existing paradigm, especially since he has already alluded to it.
I'm preparing to be blown away...

You never cease to amaze me, Jim. I can't imagine how awesome it must be to work for an owner who is so incredibly passionate about his company's work that he stays up late to post product teaser pics on the user forums..
It is quite awesome indeed...
And in case anyone didn't know.. Jim isn't just posting these images.. he is creating them.
There is no "armchair CEO" action here, Jim is doing the work, dictating the design, making the renders, moving things around, moulding how everything will look in the end. He's the hardest working employee at RED.. and sleeps the least :)

Hi Zakaree,
HVX seems like a very old camera now, I would not want to pay more than $1000 for one today. Far better cameras are available today for $6000.
Stephen
BTW the DigiBeta with a 4.8mm wide zoom was far cheaper to rent than the HVX. The director wanted to edit using final cut and firewire.

And just so everyone knows, I respect Stephen. Just giving him a hard time. I think Red needs to make money so this train can keep on rolling. That means profit margins have to stay decent. I'd like to see Scarlet hit the sub $5000 mark, but not at the expense of the company not making money or having to make compromises that make me not want the camera. I'm always for getting gear cheap as long as it does the job and the company stays in business.

I'm still amazed at the "over 1,000,000 hits prediction", considering the number of unique hits red.com already gets a day, The news will have to be so momentous that it snowballs by word of mouth / blogs (gizmodo and engadget) and news sites (digg / reddit)...
but i guess once you figure in all the international employees of Sony, Canon and Panasonic that are tuning in to see the device that is putting them out of jobs.... doh! Got the logic.

How about this for a "wildest speculation":
Red has made a breakthrough in sensor technology - a very, very fast high resolution plenoptic sensor, and a similar breakthrough in compression technology.
(in case you don't know what plenoptic means, read this)
http://www-bcs.mit.edu/people/jyawang/demos/plenoptic/plenoptic.html
The pocket-sized camera is able to shoot 8K plenoptic video at very high frame rates under normal lighting conditions and compress them to a manageable size. The sensor sensitivity, speed and compression efficiency have all been improved by a factor of 100 or so. The footage will be always shot at, say, 2400 frames a second.
What would this mean in practice??
1. Shooting plenoptic means the footage is instantly 3D compatible, with single camera, single lens.
2. A high resolution depth matte can be extracted from the image by computing the differences of the view points. No more greenscreen...
3. The camera's focus point and depth of field characteristics can be determined in post
3b. In the future there will be software that will generate 3D mesh from the footage, even if it's just one frame, as well as extract camera's path as 3D motion, but the rumor is that this may be done by a 3rd party ;-)
4. Shooting at 2400 fps means footage can be conformed to any normal playback frame rate in post.
5. It also means the shutter speed can be determined in post by combining individual frames (i.e. 1/48 at 24 fps would mean combining 50 frames together, then throwing away 50 frames, rinse and repeat).
6. As a side effect, the camera would be a HDR camera - the exposure would be created from 50 combined normal dynamic range frames, which in practice means roughly 6 extra stops of latitude.
7. A "minor" side effect would be awesome slow motion footage (when giving away extra dynamic range etc.), up to 1% speed.
8. Of course creating speed ramps in post is also a non-issue.
9. Due to yet another bunch of breakthroughs in the manufacturing process, this all can be yours for just $999.-
10. It ships in december 2008, available at all grocery stores near you.
...how'd that sound?
PS: building a high speed plenoptic camera is possible with today's technology, at least in theory. It wouldn't fit in the pocket though, and $999 is a bit of an underestimate for the cost...

That's funny, it's the futuristic sci fi posts like these that bring me back to this thread.
Cameras like the one i described are not necessarily that far in the future.
If this stuff follows Moore's law, 100 time improvement compared to current technology would only take about 10 years or so. Remember it's just roughly 10 years since all digital cameras were SD - RED ONE pushes dozens of times more image data through the pipeline.
And it doesn't need to be 100 times better to be better...
Even RED ONE can be used in the way i described, if you skip the plenoptic part.
When shooting 2K at 1/120s. 120 fps, it should be possible to conform the footage to different frame rates and shutter speeds without visible artifacts (i.e. for 1/40 sec 24fps footage one would combine 3 frames, throw away 2). Combining the image from three frames should also improve signal to noise ratio (usable dynamic range) by more than one stop.
As far as plenoptic cameras go, they already exist.

A. Still $3,000
B. A full stop of DNR more than R1

E. Any three of these!

I don't care what anyone says, this is the camera of my dreams! I have heard of plenoptic sensor technology before briefly and although its still a ways off, those features would be mystical. Imagine the control you would have in post. Oh, i accidently missed focus...no problem, we will bring it back in post. Forget 3d tracking apps, DOF, DR, and Phantom cameras. Maybe this is dreaming but i think this technology IS doable, maybe just not right now. But why shun it when its demand that drives the forward thinking and innovation?
Anyhow, looking forward to your announcement on the 13th Jim, even if it doesn't include z-depth and 2000fps :-)

It IS doable, NOW. Already done. Plenoptic cameras, and the software to do all i described exist today. See my last post on the previous page for links - especially watch the linked video, it's mindblowing.
Maybe this is dreaming but i think this technology IS doable, maybe just not right now.
What's NOT here yet, is high resolution, high speed moving images capturing, humanly sized affordable plenoptic cameras. All these features DO exist - just not combined to one camera ;-)

Uhm...
So Halsu you say 2400fps at 8K right?
The RED One does 24fps at 4K and given the current 8GB cards can hold about 4 minutes at 24fps that's 5760 frames to fill the 8 GIG card.
With what you are speculating, that should be barely enough for a little over 2 seconds if it were 2400fps at 4K
But since you want 8K, that should be down to 1/4thso you'd be lucky to record half a second on 200$ worth of storage.
And on top of that you want the camera to retail less than 1K$ or as much as it would cost you to buy 2.5 seconds worth of storage...
Still, I like the way you are thinking :)
Jim, what can I cay.
I'm waiting credit card in hand.
So existing RED One owners get first dibs on Epic and Scarlet or just Epic?

No, no, the beauty is that they've of course found a new compression algorithm that will fit hours of that data to a cheap 8GB SD card, visually lossless.

I see what you did there...
Jim, it's Halloween, you have to give us a few more hints.... it's the rules, you know what I'm talking about... we get a treat or we'll be forced into playing tricks.
Sorry, I wish it could be some other way, but rules are rules!

Be sure to check the video, it explains the technology with great examples:

How wants to be the man/woman to refoccus a 90 min feature movie and who wants to be the cameraman tto let them do this?? with his shots??
Not me!! Its nice for foto's to fix your msitakes, but in a movie a different focus gives a different emotion and i love to keep that in my own hands. Robert

November 13th cannot come soon enough, let alone the delivery date.
To me, that's the only certainty at play in here.

To me that feels a bit silly... as if having more controll was a bad thing.
Every cameraman with any smarts should do it, if it was possible. One less thing to worry about on the set. Less takes, more finished footage each day. The take where the actors are at their best could be used a bit more often.
And just like photographers now participate in color correction sessions during post production, they could participate in a focusing session in the future if they feel the need.
It's the same as if you didn't want to shoot RAW, because you want to control the image's tonal range on the shoot.

Yup! Exactly. Your images are already being tweaked in post more than ever. Why not have that much more control? Sorry, but progressive thinking doesn't say (for example) I don't need or want a 4k digital motion picture camera which was unheard of 5 years ago cause I have this really cool XL2. A good 1st will nail focus so we will throw that argument out the window for a moment but wouldn't it be nice to be able to turn that shot into a rack focus or be able to incorporate VFX immediately on set so everyone could truely visualize that action scene? Or to be able to move on to the next shot quicker not having to worry about that green screen being evenly lit cause guess what...no greenscreen will be necessary! Call me crazy but this will be the camera of the future! There are already guys who have created cameras that motion track backgrounds and key greencreen on the fly. They seem a bit clumsy but are a step in the right direction.

Insane speculation is a formidable contribution to the imaginative processes of R&D. If this madness is an accident, then it's a valuable one. If it's a result of intention then RED are geniuses. Keep up the madness...and the rationality...and the wide-cast net of contribution. Imagination. Speculation. Even when verging on the ridiculous or extreme, it is potent food for what IS possible. I'm sure this forum has pushed the boundaries of RED's imagination and design of current products. The insane stuff stretches the boundaries of the sane stuff. Every company would be smart to have such a website. Sorry Dave.

Heh, I wonder how many times this conversation has gone on:
Jim: "Did you see this crazy feature request? These people need to get in touch with reality."
Graeme: "Actually, that one's totally possible."
Jim: "...really?"
Graeme: "It'd take a little work, but the technology is...uh...already...I'm going to have to cancel my vacation, aren't I?"

If you chose to make your plenoptically shot video 3d i would think you would want to keep it all in focus. That way the human eyes watching get to choose what is in focus and what is out of focus.
I know plenoptic cameras are here now...but aren't there still problems with resolution? I thought that since the sensor was taking in all the light in a 4d space they had less resolution left per area of focus. Maybe 8k would take care of that...i dont know.

Multiple "viewpoints" are stored at the same time - which means multiple pixels are needed to store what will become one pixel in the resulting image.
As a wild guess, a plenoptic camera with 8K sensor would output at around 0,5K for final images, based on the video i linked to earlier (the "plenoptic cluster" seems to be about 20X20 pixels).
To get 8K final output... the sensor would need to have an unspeakable amount of resolution to start with.
I suppose it's a tradeoff between accuracy and resolution. The bigger the pixel cluster, the better quality - but visually similar results could probably be achievable with lower pixel counts and some smart interpolation algorithms.

Wildest expectations for me:
A. Still $3,000
B. A full stop of DNR more than R1
C. A full stop more sensitive than the 2/3" mode of R1
D. The same zoom range on the built in lens but 2.4f
E. Any three of these!
THAT'S W-I-L-D!
You know what, on a serious note... any TWO of these would be an accurate measure of "wildest expectations" IMHO.
And I'd take A and C. :innocent:
