Awfully quiet here.

I hate being able to only use some Nikon lenses I had to dug up last minute, when I have such a lovely set of Zeiss T* coated Contax lenses gathering dust. Can someone please either make IMS a reality, or get the Canon mount delivered. I do not need any fancy electronics in my mount, just a plain metal adapter thingy that does not void the warranty. Don't care about lens data or bluetooth knobs or alien spaceship remote control at this point.

Sorry, I am just a bit thin worn on the patience side. Been following the various mount threads for way too many months, and from a customer point of view, I must say that not a lot has happened. Sure we wasted a lot of time keeping updated on the newest developments in warranty issues, were put back by virtually eternal delays, silences, half truths, hopes were raised, hopes were crushed, hopes were re-raised, surprises came and left, backlashes, disappointments, amazements visited, but mostly frustrations along the way, waving at different levels. And now there is mostly silence.

I hate all this silence.

And just to make it clear: I am not talking about RED.

Rant over. :angry03:

--------

Erik: since you cannot deliver the smart mounts in sufficient numbers, could you please reverse your decision on not offering a dumb mount. Or at least sell the construction rights of the dumb mount to an interested third party.

Ari: could you please, please let us know what is happening? Don't leave us out in the :cold:

Andy: how are the talks coming with Red re: warranty issue?

ET: Are you working on a Canon mount? Is there an ETA?

Les: What is happening to the Contax mount? Will there be one? Warranty?

Smart people in da house, including, but not limited to, Douglas: Can anyone please, please come up with a solution? Prettyplease? Nothing fancy electronic with many buttons and cool 3d renderings, but a plain metal adapter that works, leaves the warranty intact and gets shipped in numbers. Preferably yesterday. Money waiting, and surely not just from me.

Hmmmm...I have a gut feeling that RED's November 13 camera specifications info will explain the lens mounting options on Epic - and perhaps additional options for lens mounts on RED One.

Just a guess...I have no knowledge of this whatsoever...again, just a guess...

If the IMS mount wouldn't have voided the upgrades to my RED cameras, and also void the trade-in of my RED cameras into Epic, I would have probably put the IMS mount on at least one of my RED Cameras. Using multiple lens types quickly and effectively in field production is definitely something that interests me. As it is now, one of my RED cameras has a RED Nikon mount, and the other two have the stock PL mounts. If I had a multiple lens type mount on my cameras, I would regularly switch from PL to Nikon to Canon to Leica, etc. I work in a lot of styles and genres, thus I love the concept of having lots of lens use options on my cameras.

I hope that with Epic, and backward compatible with RED One, that sometime soon RED either certifies the IMS mount for use on Epic and RED One, or RED announces their own universal mount, with specific lens adaptors available.

The concept of RED One from the very beginning was as a flexible, scalable, and modular camera system - and a universal lens mount system would seriously enhance all of those goals of the camera design.

Agreed Steve.
I know this isn't "crazy rumor" thread, but I think you will be very happy with RED's upcoming announcements.

Interesting, anything you can share that doesn't break your NDA?

Well, I can tell you I begged Jim to not only get his own IMS but to make sure that Epic came with one as well.

Who knows, perhaps he heard me?

If it's available to Epic, then it will available to the Red One. Maybe he'll say in his November announcement.

Who said anything about an NDA?
You'll have to ask Jim for details.
I do have to be careful about what I say here.
But not for the reasons one would think.

Thanks Martin for bringing this discussion back to the front. I was thinking of doing it myself!

I think the responses are right. We could go blue in the face about this only to find on Nov 13 that it's sorted.

feels like waiting for the next Steve Jobs keynote ... hehe

I waited long enough, I mean even if an announcement is made, nothing will be available for another 6 months. So I decided to go with the Nikon Red Underdahl mount. At least I can start shooting.

I'm in the same boat. It is absurd how many C/Y lenses I can't even consider mounting to the camera. A mount that is compatible with 35 adapters would be great too, but start with RED first.

I think we need to hear news of an EOS dumb mount available STARTING Nov. 14th just after this annoucement. I've got too many projects getting pounded by lens rental costs when I've got dozens of beautiful glass sitting on my shelves beside me.

I see on a horizon three potential options:

1. RED certifies the IMS mount for RED1 and EPIC.
2. Another third party vendor like a Visual Products is making univerasl mount for RED1 and EPIC.
3. RED announces their own universal mount but I'm not so sure because it would be too much for them to deal with all those (selected) mounts.

The concept of RED One from the very beginning was as a flexible, scalable, and modular camera system - and a universal lens mount system would seriously enhance all of those goals of the camera design.

Universal mount, that's exactly what RED project needs right now together with a prompt fix of SDK that can enable native R3D workflow across many apps and platforms.

Exactly Sanjin. I guess we'll keep our fingers crossed and hope for some news sometime soon on possible options from RED and/or 3rd party manufacturers - hopefully ones that won't void warranties. The need for a universal mount for R1 and Epic to maximize the camera's versatility is definitely real - thus IMO there is a massive market for such a mount.

Gibby,

totally agree with you.

Hopefully RED Team was listening.

Waiting for 13th of the month to see it.

I too would very much like to see a direct Contax mount adapter. I have only six Zeiss C/Y lenses and they are so much much nicer than the Nikon equivalents. They focus in the right direction, they have enormous focus throws with a nice damping action, the build quality is hefty and excellent, and the glass is uniform and outstanding throughout the range.

I have the 28mm 2.8, 85mm 1.4, 28-85mm 3.3, 100mm Macro 2.8 and 135 2.8. All are in showroom condition. It's amazing just how well looked after these second-hand lenses are on eBay. I really want a bargain 50mm 1.4 and a 21mm 2.8, but the 21mm has gone stratospheric with the falling Aussie dollar.

Please please Red, do consider the Zeiss Contax users out there. If you supply the mount we will come.

Peter
