Shooting on Steadicam with "A" Cam;
Two 8GB CF cards with data on them unmount themselves from my MacBook Pro desktop. When playing back from CF card, .R3D files in RedAlert! are visible, but Quicktime Proxies are corrupt and display no image. When I try to copy the root folder to an external HD, the cards eject themselves from the computer and refuse to copy over.
WTF?
I need serious help here; this is costing us half a day.

if your r3d files are visible.. then they are there.. your reference quicktimes are not playing because you have not updated the codec.. cant explain your copy/eject issues

Quicktime is updated... I've been fine for the last 3 weeks in this regard; the .R3Ds playback from the card in RedAlert... just trying to find an alternate way of copying them to the G-SAFE now...
Any ideas, guys?
I would try an other reader for the cards.

Not an option; we're in the middle of nowhere.
We also just ran footage to the REDDRIVE, and also having the same issue.

Have you tried a real computer? Like a PC? http://achtel.com/smiles/clown.gif

I did years ago; it wasn't for me and my mommy told me it was bad for me, so I gave it up in '96. :sarcasm:

You can download Build 16 firmware from www.red.com/support .
Have you filed an incident ticket as well on www.red.com/support ?
Thanks, BC

No, I cannot download Build 16 on the RED site, because I am not the camera owner, and the owner of the camera was unable to be reached to get his email address and password.
That's a major drawback for problems on-set that require immediate attention. I understand why RED has it this way, but for D.I.T.'s working on location, it presents a huge headache if they're not the owners of the camera being used on-set...

A RED owner can authorize you on his/her account as a contact who can download firmware updates on their behalf.

Drew, are you shooting Build 17, without a Build 16 backup on set?
Hope this all works out. Maybe it's a computer issue.
Next time, make sure to have all Red firmware versions backed up to a disc or a flash stick to bring with you on set. This is a requirement of all Red DIT/Techs. If the camera has been upgraded to Build 16, there's no going back, so you need all of the firmware upgrades from Build 16 on.
Other things to check.
Firewire cable
Repair Disk permissions
Create a new user account and log into that and try to mount cards
Run Disk Warrior if you have it

Drew,
Get hold of another CF card reader even if it's a slow USB2 one and also try another computer.
Does the card playback okay on the camera?

Part of the issue was with the computer... Quicktime did something strange, and after a third reboot, the footage played back AND I was able to copy the files to the drive.

Part of it was a computer issue; I'm finding it to be an issue with the Quicktime plugin and the latest version of Quicktime.
I am the D.I.T. on set, and I was unaware they could be backed up from the camera out to the CF cards. Is that correct?

It's difficult when the person you rented from was unavailable to get their contact info from them in order to access the website.
You should be able to download the Build firmware with the camera SN and the owner's name.

You have just learned a lesson from DIT-101.2: FIELD SHOOTING.
Always bring firmware copies in your kit. I have the latest B17 on my camera now, but I carry a copy of it as well as the B16 release build in my kit. I know you're not the camera owner, but the camera comes with an SD card that is just perfect for this. You don't have to store the camera firmware on fast CF cards. I keep B16 on a 1GB Kingston 233X card.
Always a good idea to carry a spare CF reader and a reader than can handle very kind of media you have with you -- SD, CF, etc..

Jeff, how can I acquire the firmware if I'm not a RED owner? And if I don't have access to the owner's information to acquire the download from RED?
Can you email me Build 16? I understand it's a necessity, but I don't have access to it...

1 failure on Mac > hundreds on PC.
No thanks, mate!

Befriend another Red DIT to get these updates on a regular basis or get added to an account as Brent suggested.

Like Steve pointed out, get added to someone's support account or grab it from another DIT/owner. Technically it should be supplied by whoever supplied the camera. If you just showed up for the shoot as DIT and did not provide the camera (as in get it from the owner for the shoot yourself), then that's a different matter. Yes I know this makes it hard, but if you're going to serve as a DIT on a RED shoot, you have to bring the right tools and that includes all current builds of RED software, ready to be installed (Windows and Mac) as well as current release camera build plus one or two others that might have an advantage for the shoot.
Anyway, don't take that the wrong way, I'm trying to help. If you're going to continue to provide RED DIT services, you will need these things. If you don't have a way to get them from those you work for or with, send me a PM and I'll see if I can steer you in the right direction or help you out.
