I've seen where Red is offering 100% buyback for people upgrading their Ones for Epics. I had a couple questions about it.
Does it only apply to Ones bought before xx/xx/20xx?
Is there an expiration date on this offer?
Does it have to be done within x days of receipt of One?
Is there a page or post somewhere describing the plan and any other restrictions on it?
For me, I am looking at getting a One but probably wont have the money till next spring/summer. I'd like to be able to upgrade to Epic, but again probably wouldn't have money for that till late '09 or early '10.

No restrictions has been given at this point in time.
So I would say it is safe to assume that any RED camera bought from the dawn of time, and untill futher notice from RED will qualify for the upgrade programme.
My guess is that opening your RED or doing other "warranty-voiding" procedures might also disqualify your RED from the upgrade programme.

Wasn't there discussion somewhere about having to have the original PL mount on the cam when it is returned?
Something like that...

Yes, since the camera shipped with the PL mount... it makes sense for them to expect it in original condition.

I'm just wondering if there will even be a RED One line after the new and revised Epic and Scarlet unveiling. I mean, when they become available.

Big question for me is 'upgrade cost'. Any ideas...?

i would guess.. 45-50k for the new body.. subtracts 17.5 for your total due

If I remember correctly, originally Epic was stated as costing $40K, so upgrade from Red One would be $22.5K. I have no idea if this has changed.

Hi,
Some PL mounts shipped better than others!

what's the difference in the PL mounts and can it be exchanged? anyone know that?
and if i buy a second hand red, am i eligible as well for the upgrade to epic?
also, does anyone know if the upgrades (sound board etc) that are carried out without charge can be done without getting the camera "recertified?" if you buy it second hand?
thanks for any information on that

Ok, now that they've made their announcement, more questions arise...
Does upgrade cover any of the epics (S35, FF35, 645, 617)?
Is it only for upgrading Ones? What about upgrading from S35 to FF35, etc? Scarlet to Epic?

I think one of Jim's posts last night said you could trade your R1 for ANY Epic, and yes, it is only for upgrading R1s. And he also said once you choose either the option of upgrading to Epic or the option to purchase a Scarlet at 12 percent discount, the R1 WILL BE EXECUTED!! So remember to forgive the executioner before the deed is done.
afterthought: Maybe he only said the number of the camera would be executed.... but you should still forgive the executioner.

Does anyone have a link to where Red has the terms and conditions regarding this trade-in offer? My bosses seem interested in getting one of the epics next year and it'd be nice to at least get started with an R1 sooner, but they'd need some kind of assurances that the offer will still be good when we end up getting an epic. Not that I like reading legalese, but something more official than a post on a message board. Namely things like how long is the offer good for, does it only apply to serial numbers up to xxx, that kind of stuff.

It applies to ALL RED ONEs (every serial number). If you are interested in an EPIC there is no downside to buying a RED ONE. Full $17,500 credit when returned for an EPIC. Almost all of the RED ONE accessories work with EPIC. Not every one, but almost every one.
You can tell them they have my word. :-)
See Recon stickies for more info.

Jim's word you can deposit in the bank... and still not worry if the bank folds because of the recession.

Please forgive me if you have already answered this Jim, but what are you going to do with the used Red Ones? I know you probably don't want to make a habit of full credit trade-in programs, but have you considered some sort of "trade-in" program at a fair price for future upgraded brains and such (and when I say fair, I mean what the normal or further reduced resell value of the used equipment would be as opposed to the amazing offer of full trade-in credit...unless you are feeling charitable and want to offer more, of course! :} )?
Have you thought of creating a "used" or "pre-owned" retail section of the Red Store? You could start it with the Red Ones, and continue the program when people want to upgrade their brains in the future. Maybe a "modular" purchasing system with trade-in credit for a modular camera system? :D
I worked at a video game store when I first started college, and they had a very lucrative system going. Want a new game? Trade in old (working) ones for in-store credit towards a new game! Want a game, but can't (quite) afford one? Buy pre-owned at a reduced price.
Replace "game" with "module" or "brain", and you get the picture of course.
Even though I feel that those companies jack up the prices of used games to such a significant amount to make the system not worth the effort (for me, at least), maybe you can do this better? Maybe you can sell them at a higher asking price than what others normally would by offering an extended warranty and full support? Or (insert _____ here). You know business better than I, so I will leave that one to you.
It could also help a lot of people at the bottom tier climb up the ladder...
Just a few thoughts.
