Any chance this could ever happen? - alla "Best 5 min short" wins a RED One Camera? :)

Yeah. But your short has to be shot on a RED :)

Hehe - I'm totally there. Hey Jim - why not put RED #1 up as the price? ;-) (I'm kidding ofcourse).

I would think that with a prize like RED there would have to be an entry fee to cover the cost of the camera. I know that it's marketing for RED, but most of the entries would probably start with people on the list to buy one in the first place. :)
I'd pay a hundred bucks or so to enter.

I don't think RED needs marketing. They get plenty just for what they are stirring up with this undertaking. Plus there are the fanboy and info. sites. Then you have the "I don't believe it" sites. It all makes for good publicity. The RED is it's own marketing, with a little sprinkle of good strategy on the part of the RED team to help fuel the fires of curiosity, excitement, anger and dissent.

This came up over at dvinfo.net... Anyway, I doubt such a contest will take place.
Now, what I would like to see is a contest for reservation holders so we can move to a lower number. ;) I hesitated the last time around for reservations (have the form all filled out, I just never faxed it) and I missed the boat. I'll see what happens in the next 10 days when I put in for mine and what # I'll be. Probably 1300 or some such nonsense. :(

I don't know if it would be likely to happen or not, but it would be fun. Filmmaker's only need the slightest provocation to be filmmakers. :)

A contest to win a free Red? Yeah right! Though I could see Jarred doing a Reduser Fest where all entries must be shot with Red and the prize being some sort of a Red accessory

It always blows me away. You get an amazing product at an amazing price and people still are not satisfied. It's got to be free.

Inquiring about the chance for a competition like this one does not equate to being ungrateful, as you have implied, for what the RED team is doing.
But if feigning confusion and taking the moral high ground is what you desire, by all means...

I second that. I'm completely grateful to RED as I'm sure RED is grateful to it's supporters.
I still think a competition would be great. I had even mentioned a RED spec-commercial contest or something just for fun... so not everybody that would like a competition is looking for anything free. Last I checked I'm going to be putting out a good $30k this year to get behind Jim and the RED team.

When I first started looking into RED on dvxuser.com, I remember seeing a link to a site with a bunch of pictures of RED Headquarters. Does anyone have that link?

taking the moral high ground
Damn, I'm usually not accused of that...:D
God, am I becoming that cynical? I'm halfway expecting Filmmaker1977 to come in and "vote with you". ;)

It's okay. I spent my first two years outta film school working on a film that I'm still paying off about a band that since became famous and then took me to court to stop it from being distributed once the festivals started taking notice. A few panic attacks later I found myself shooting fucking event videos for extra scratch - that's right, I'm not too proud to admit it. Needless to say, I have a deep understanding of cynicism.
Boy, this couch is comfy. Is my time up? ;)
ps. who is Filmmaker1977?

If memory serves, such a contest did take place at dvxuser - an "idea contest," where the best new idea for Red wins, and with the winner being an idea which would create some kind of 'depth map' of every frame in order to take an instant 'depth key' from the image, instead of rotoscoping or greenscreening.
I believe the grand prize was a Red One.
Yes indeed, I've found it, and here it is:

Nope, the prize was a Red One Reserve...the winner still owes $16,500 if they actually want the camera.

Dude - that's not really the point. I'd put down the 17.500 in an instance if I had that kind of money lying around (or enough camera-related work to pay for it). I guess this thread is just a vague hope for those of us that can't afford a RED ;)

Or maybe I'll just post a pic of my car stereo sitting on my '79 Ford Fairmont upholstery and then, when it inspires someone to design a remote for RED, I'll get the royalties and pay for a RED camera with that!
Oh, wait...

You got the Ford part right.
All my ideas are free for Red to use. No charge. :)
What I really want is an iPhone that films 1080p. I'll settle for 720p. :p
