I plan to buy a Steadicam Archer with HD Monitor at the end of 2007 and like to ask if the following is possible.

1. As Iīve learned the Red batteries have a standard V-mount, is it possible to put and use it on the Steadicamīs battery mount ?

2. Does Red One connect to the standart 12 V power outlets of the Steadicam or is it by design ( for any reason ) limited to be powered by Redīs batteries or via the charger ?

3. If financially reasonable I would like to use a 32 or 64 Gb SSD disk through the SATA-module instead of using the Red drive.
I read somewhere that the sata-module and the ssd will be fit to the left side of the camera, where right now the raw port sits, is that correct ?

BTW, Any new info about support for solid state disks ?

Maybe silly questions.

There was some talk at NAB about a special RED Sled for the Archer with Red specific power, data and HD-SDI monitoring.
Lets hope.

That sounds great Evin, thanks for the info.
Letīs also hope they wonīt slap a "Red" extra charge on top.

I would think that Jim would frown on that because of the whole nature of Red. We can hope for special Red volume pricing (Speculation!) that would give you the whole rig for less than the plain jane config. This camera is going to unleash a flood of dollars into mid level support equipment. Also Actioncam is debuting a $10K Red specific stabilizer so Tiffen is going to really have to justify that $10K premium for the Archer.

Evin, do you know when ActionCam will be releasing that Red stabalizer? I had never heard of ActionCam until just now. At NAB I flew a Varizoom, Glidecam and the Steadicam Archer but I don't recall ever seeing ActionCam.

Will that be $10k for the vest, arm and sled? I just checked their site and their prices seem to be in the 20k+ Euros!

Yes it does include all three shawn, there is a thread around somewhere started by goffb (Brian Goff of actionproducts).

Apparently the arm of the flyer can actually take more weight than the specified 15lbs. It's the sled that cannot carry more. A redesigned lower spar that would allow for the attachment of the reddrive, batteries and red arm could possibly allow you to fly a bit more.

Nice looking gear but damn, the website is a pain. These eyes are getting old.

Hi vinney57,

Yeah their site is hard to view, and it's the new version! I've been looking at their stuff for about a year now and have not been able to find a third party review anywhere. I asked Charles King and the guys at HBS if they had seen one but no luck there either. Anyone can make a good looking piece of hardware but if it doesn't perform then it's just another pretty face. Remember the Edsel? But on second thought mayby that's not such a good example.lol

Hi vinney57,

You can make a search for "actioncam" on the www.steadicamforum.com - some reviews there. Not much, but we have mainly be active in europe for the past years. And the new system hasn't been out for long.

It not only looks good, it realy does the job - of course you wouldn't expect me to say anything else:biggrin: . Let me point out that I am in first place a DoP and ActionCam operator and thats my major income. I've been booked as an operator on almost every major film here in switzerland for the last few years - many that have over 80% of the shoots with the ActionCam, replacing the need for a dolly. One of these films "vitus" (www.vitus-film.com) was in the last round for oscar nomination this year. On our web site you can view some clips in the download section (right click if necessary to download).

$9.9k is for the entire unit (arm, vest, sled). Release date is soon, basically we have the unit already on stock, but are waiting on some technical information from RED to get the wiring right.

20k euros is the old price list - the new one should be up soon.

Here's a link to that thread. It's in the Off Topic forum:
