An idea came up to me about additional device that IMHO could be very useful to ease up and speed up the digital workflow even more.
I’m not suggesting that anything’s missing in RED’s current offer, this is just sharing thoughts about future devices.

Imagine a 7-11” 1080p display, with built in ssd media slots and additional features, which would enable 3 major uses for this device:

1. On camera monitor (in heavier tripod setups)

– Larger preview for focus puller
– Additional recording device – no copying needed at the end of the shoot

2. Clip management device

- Reducing the need for computer in demanding situations
- Connectable to RED-DRIVE, RED RAM, ExpressCard, CF & 1.8" disc modules
- User can copy the footage in every direction (from/to any media)
- Connectable to larger pro monitors via HD-SDI
- Connectable to larger consumer monitors via HDMI

3. External preview device for laptop editing

– Frees space on laptop display
– Provides greater resolution
– Provides more accurate colour reproduction
– If needed, footage is edited directly from device, and stays only on device (selectable on device’s permissions settings). This function could be especially useful when the footage is edited on third party’s computer.

Tech specs:

-7-11” 1080p display
-10 bit colour (OLED technology supports it)
-Built-in stereo speakers (NXT technology) with headphone jack
-Carbon fibre body (yes I have the exact and interesting pricing from my cooperant, including moulding and no, it's not too expensive)
-Built-in solid state media readers (CF, 1.8” flash, ExpressCard)
-Retractable legs (used for laptop editing)

Additional feature

Fingerprint reader – for different user settings with permissions/restrictions to delete & copy functions, video output lock, etc.

Suggested price range

$ 2000-4000

Picture this:
The shoot is over, you take the device, delete marked bad clips (on multiple media simultaneously if needed) connect the device to Mac Book Pro and do a rough edit. Export the rough edit back to the device and you can review anytime anywhere. You reduce the need for additional staff and the director can concentrate on the story without any fuss or delays. You get back to the studio, already having multiple copies of the footage, and a rough edit with alteration suggestions and different variants written down.

The device would be lightweight, resistant, media secure and off course - stylish. Just imagine passing the footage on this.
Portable, practical and modern digital workflow.

I would be sold on a 7" SDI onboard (IMHO a very workable size, any bigger and it's to cumbersome on camera) with a frame store capability, SD of CF slot, and possibly the ability to do a low res QT capture for sending via the web to clients who aren't at the shoot. I currently use a Neuros MPEG4 CF card recorder velcro'd to the back of my on board to do just that. I makes a mp4 of the video tap image and puts it onto a CF card for me. Clients LOVE it.
