Just thought I'd note that Ted didn't use the term "5K" in conjunction with "EPIC" twice today at DV Expo, instead just saying "bigger." In the same speech, he referred to Scarlet's "3K" and Red One's "4k" several times.

Sometimes Ted gets confused ....:w00t:

Could be that EPIC is not 5K.

As Jim wrote in his signature here:

Perhaps now it's Infinity™ K?

Great,

perhaps you'll get dizzy.

Perhaps "bigger" means "four-perforations plus look-around"!!!

Say it's so, Ted...

No Brook, it'll obviously be Vistavision plus look around.

65mm sized?

RED Baraka.

Lol.

RED does look like 65mm.

I believe they are going to announce that EPIC's new specs go to "L" rather than "K"...

"IT'S ONE REZ LOUDER!!!" :devil::devil::devil:

You mean......It goes to,..11!!?

I think it'll be a vista size sensor that will take pl mount lenses and red will create custom lenses for the larger area of the sensor :)

Maybe it should be around 5.5K RAW to create 4K RGB from, with the picture area recorded being Super-35 in width (24mm wide) but with an extra look-around area for monitoring, so perhaps a sensor that is 26mm wide.

If EPIC goes for 5K, i found that the "soon" 4.5K res from RED ONE will almost match with EPIC res. How much different is it going to make ? I think there will be more details but not tremendous. But what lens can we use to capture those 5K details or "more" perhaps ? and it also comes down to new compression from EPIC, and a lot more tech details to produce picture. It's very exciting to see what Jim is going to announce.

But of course, we will know the exact details on 13th Nov. I'm hoping for better dynamic range, solve rolling shutter, more mature RED Code, etc

Honestly vistavision would do more harm then good, I think. I wanted something like that for a long time until it was pointed out just how limited our lens options would be. Considering how scarce lenses are now as it is...

I'm hoping for a 4 perf sensor that is 4-5k horizontal and 3-4k tall. That would give us the option of using it like a R1, or putting anamorphics on and using the full sensor. Lots of filmmakers immidiately think 'anas' when they think 'epic filmmaking'.

...this would let you have a fantastic anamorphic image, even as big as 5k x 3.5k, or the same image we've been making all along, but a bit sharper and with more DR.

David said it above, about the sensor actually being larger than 5K for look-around and I think it will be.

Personally, I would like to see a 4:3 sensor in EPIC with a max recordable area of 5120x3840 in the 4:3 frame. This would be great for anamorphics and not as restrictive as always being locked to 16:9 or 2:1 aspects. The maximum 4:3 resolution out of the RED One is 3072x2304 and a significant crop of the sensor.

However, if I had to bet on it, I'd say the EPIC will still most likely be 16:9. It's just that Mysterium X will give us greater photosite density and better sensitivity and range. It's supposed to have much better read-reset times for less skew.

That would be sweet.

...and I thought the Epic was to be priced between 20 and 30k. At 5k, who is going to buy a R1?

Thanks, Sanjin.

Nice diagrams.

I love more diagrams, but wouldn't the pictures have more area to show?

I would expect that EPIC will go to above 6K at 4:3. Reason for this is because IMAX finishes their prints at 6K. EPIC should equal IMAX or better. IMAX gets scanned at about 8K generally.

I'm betting on a 1:1 5K sensor, ala Phantom's 2048x2048.

Just wanna put my chip on the table.
