I am strongly considering getting the Red One pretty soon and in light of the EPIC and SCARLET announcement coming in a few days, I am curious as to what RED cinema's product cycle is. Will we be seeing a Red TWO, to replace the Red one, next year?

I just don't want to spend 17.5k on a camera body that will be (hardware) updated at the end of the year.

In regards to RED product cycle is now a good time to buy?

Sorry if this should be elsewhere, i'm new.

Just wait a couple of days, and I would say your questions will be answered.

I'd probably wait until the 13th, but then it sounds like I'm telling you not to buy the camera. I feel confident saying that a Red One will still be a valid purchase, but it is worth waiting to see what Scarlet delivers. If it falls short of what you need, then the choice will be easy. Red One. Epic is another beast altogether. Unless something dramatic has occurred and Epic is no longer what we thought it would be, I'm guessing it's out of your price range. Sounds to me like the choice is between Scarlet and Red One.

sorry to hijack the thread, but i am looking to buy a used red with a low serial number (#4xx)

do i have to expect a lower quality PL mount as i have read somewhere or are they all the same?

if it's lower, is it exchangeable?

thanks.

As the announcement is only days away it might pay to wait but whatever is announced, Red have said that anyone who buys a Red One will be able to trade it in on an Epic for their full purchase amount. Sort of a no-loose situation really. If you have a project staring you down I'd just go ahead. You stand to lose the cost of freight and exchange rates.

Waiting on an the announcement here in a few days seems a bit silly. If you need or want a RED One, then go ahead and order it. It's not going to ship before the announcement on the 13th anyway. EPIC is going to be positioned above the RED One and at a higher price. RED One owners can trade their camera in toward an EPIC and receive full $17.5K trade-in value! So that's a fine argument to get the RED One, even if you' think you're only interested in EPIC.

Scarlet is a different animal (or presumed to be) and will come at a lower price point. I think they're going to sell lots of these and it's going to be a perfect companion to anyone with a RED One or EPIC.

@ Xax,

The PL mount is the same on all the cameras. Besides, all cameras are getting the latest /i pin and audio board upgrades and a free check-up. There is a new style lock ring for the PL mount, which is a separate accessory and I don't believe it has been put on shipping cameras yet. Personally, I like the standard PL lock ring, but the new one is supposed to be easier on the fingers or something. It doesn't have the detachable spikes that stick out like fangs and get in the way.

Has RED Cinema made any statement or hinted at any time frame for product refreshes? Like every year, two years? I've looked around but haven't found anything.

Nothing specific. Only that EPIC and Scarlet were "early 2009", but that may change with the upcoming announcement on the 13th. The RED One will have a sensor upgrade available at some point after EPIC has shipped.

I think the sensor upgrade has been mentionened before. Is this upgrade free or are the costs known allready?

Although I agree that if you have an immediate need and Red One fulfills it, there's really no need to wait. But if there is no rush, I'd wait the extra few days. Whatever is announced might be a better fit. Maybe he won't need all of Red One's features and can save some money. Then again, I have no idea what's coming on the 13th. :)

Perfect thread for me as I am contemplating what to do and MUST ASK SENIOR MEMBERS and RED WUNDERKINDS:

DO ANY OF YOU RED OWNERS HAVE A BASIS FOR COMPARISON OF FILE PROCESSING FROM MACS BOOTING FROM AND UTILIZING SATA DRIVES VS THE 7200s?

Is a MAC PRO with SATA drives better for advanced RED processing considering the size of the R3d files and the objective of outputting DPX files for picture mastering or IN PRACTICE is it still better to go with the 7200s?

I have a MacBook Pro/FCP STUDIO 2 right now but I simply doubt it will do the job even with the gluetools plug in.

True, but I'm also assuming that whatever gets announced on the 13th is still several months away. ...Hope I'm wrong about that.

Has RED Cinema made any statement or hinted at any time frame for product refreshes? Like every year, two years? I've looked around but haven't found anything.

These cameras are constantly updated via free firmware updates. It's a great model and means your camera - whichever one you choose - should never go out of date (well, as best as they can manage it without a crystal ball).

Even in terms of hardware, RED have already offered FREE updates to the audio board and lens mounts for those who purchased prior to the changes.

Consider this along with the mooted sensor upgrades and full purchase price trade ins on Epic and the notion of conventional product refreshes either doesn't apply or at least only applies slightly to these cameras.

are there any downfalls if i buy a used red vs. a brand new one now?

since i am in europe and importing a new one from the us would bring huge customs fees with it, and i've got one up to buy here, are there any problems with buying them used?

thanks in advance

You shouldn't have to pay any customs fees on the Red One body - zero. I don't know how much you will pay for a used Red in Europe but you will lose the warranty.

Let's say for instance the RED One sensor is changed down the line. Is it possible for the current RED One to have it's sensor upgraded? (Even for a price)

yes. the price hasn't been set yet, but this will be offered after epic ships.

yes. the price hasn't been set yet, but this will be offered after epic ships.

So the RED One can be upgraded to the sensor that's in the EPIC? or will they be making new sensors specifically for the Red One...?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to be as informed as possible before making a decision.
