I've been watching a lot of D90 movies lately..
They're quite good, despite the skew..
What if in 2 years time, Nikon and/or Canon release a dSLR with a moving image equivalent to the R1?
Just saying.. If Obama can be president, anything is possible now..

I think it's inevitable, but a DSLR will never be a purpose driven production tool.

They could have done it 2 years ago.
The fact that the new 5D will only shoot 30p not 24p shows you they are f#cking around and holding back technology.

In 2 years time, maybe they could.
BUT...
Red isn't standing still.
In those same 2 years time, what do you think the Red One will become?
And keep in mind the numerous upgrades that happened in MONTHS... not years immediately after Red One launched.
The Nikon/Canon Turtle will never catch up to the Red One Cheetah.

Hi,
It could look large, heavy & expensive, technology moves on rather fast.

there are lots of hurtles. Remember Reds greatest invention is Redcode. Without it, recording real color information to something portable is impossible. Once redcode isn't nessisary due to increased datarates and CF capacities, then we might see some real changes. Until then, we'll need 3x macbooks worth of processor power (plus fans) in every digital cinema camera.
Of course once we don't need redcode, I still expect all my red accessories to work with whatever Red released.

Well, it's hard to pick a side on this argument. On one hand, you have Canon and Nikon, on the other you have RED. Scarlet isn't due until after NAB and Canon and Nikon both have video DSLRs out way before then, Nikon possibly adding another, possibly, more professional model within weeks from now according to the rumors.
I've waited on the RED bandwagon for a long time. I held off projects waiting for my camera to come in. I was supposed to receive it in June, close to my birthday, then something came up and I was delayed until July, after that there was another delay, then I was delayed until August, then September, then October, then there was an even bigger delay that held off until January. By then I was going through my last semester of college, my film production classes were over and I literally only had one class as I had already met all of my requirements and then some (thank you summer school!). Also by that time, my brother and I were facing the big question, "Film school or no film school?". So, I delayed my camera myself until we could decide. June came around and by then, we were firmly decided on film school as we got back some nice acceptance letters in the mail. It wasn't until around July that I finally decided to send back my RED "R". I went to mail it but I just couldn't do it, I was too close. But then I ultimately returned it a few weeks later before school started. There was just too much going on in my life by then and it wasn't right of me to put all that money into a camera, especially since there was a cheaper model announced and coming out soon enough.
RED had let me down with the RED One. I promised myself that they wouldn't do the same with the Scarlet. Thankfully, Nikon had the foresight to release another revolutionary product, the D90, and at a price that everyone can afford. So, I'm the proud owner of a D90 and it's working out great so far, not as nice as a RED One of course but it'll last me until when the Scarlet does come out.
Now, the interesting thing is that Nikon is rumored to be coming out with a professional model with video and, if this is true, there could be an easy upgrade path for me and many other filmmakers. If Nikon and Canon can just release model after model or update after update and with other manufacturers wanting to get in on the DSLR video market, then by the time Scarlet comes out, who knows what else will be out there and whether the majority of filmmakers will truly care by that point? Now, I'm not saying anyone other than RED is going to have a $3,000 or so 3K solution by then but if people have a good enough 1080P solution with a "workable" compression scheme and 35mm optics, then the Scarlet may not be as revolutionary as many had hoped. For me, if I need the Scarlet by then I may pick one up, but most likely I won't as I'm venturing into 3D animation at this point. So who knows?
All I'm saying with all of this is that if RED wants to compete, they've got to stick to their production schedule, have everything working "enough" right out the door, and, as was foretold a while back with Scarlet Alpha (ie. before the change), they had better have enough for everyone right off the bat and not cater to just the RED owners (ie. established customers) for months or half a year while everyone else waits.

Well as I think what's been stated already is that Red owners have first stab at Scarlet. But we've also been told that they will also be rolling out much faster than the Red One did originally.

I also belong to the group who cancelled their reservation after seeing the moves by nikon and canon. It made me realise that their is a whole other game going on which might suit my need for a camera better than the red one. Of course the nikons and canons donīt have neither the resolution nor the redcoderaw of red1, since they probably just use the sraw stream and compress it h.264, but if your arenīt planning to go for the big silverscreen, and donīt mind a bit of aliasing, it might do for now. At the same time, browsing through the multiple accesories needed for the red one package I realised that with the rate things are going REDONE might be "obsolete" in three years time simply because of all the hazzles rigging it, the obtrusiveness and terrible ergonomics. add to this the accesory costs and the extra expenses for heavy-duty tripods, dollies and steadicams, compaired to future lightweight monster dsmcīs (which you can rig to a merlin with arm and west, for around 1800$... saved some bucks right there didnīt you!)... in the end it just didnīt add up for me, because being a newb I wont be able to make the money back fast enough.
Anyway as much as I love RED and the people running it, i had to take a raincheck on the red1, but i am all ears on november 13th. hope they decided to go with interchangeable lenses...

It's interesting competition for the consumer. For the first time ever there's more than enough camera to choose from. It definitely feels like the entire line between still cameras and 'video' cameras will be completely gone in a couple of years. A motion picture camera that's not also great still camera with interchangeable lenses may ultimately have a hard time finding a market. And you can bet we have RED to thank for spurring along the big boys on all that.

he he same like Graeme:
What I want to know on the 5D2 is why the still image JPEGs the camera produces are oh-so-much nicer than the video when the JPEGs are scaled down to 1080p size.... To me, when the image quality differs so much between the still and video modes when the stills are scaled to match, that there's something funny going on. ...
so yea as usually one step forward and two steps back :)
