Hello all,
I've had the Red about two weeks now and the first thing I noticed was how very hot the top of the camera gets just being on. Any hotter and it would be difficult to touch. Even when it's not recording.
Is this normal?
Thanks in advance for any insight.
Pete
PS the fan is set on auto - if I set it to hot mode it turns up the fan.

Not sure of earlier cams, but my 4744 also get burning hot. Was out on a shoot today and it's below freezing here (sweden) and the fan was on max rpm all the time.

Mine definitely does not do that, even when recording. And I always have my fan set to auto.

Just had mine for 24 hours, and the top gets flaming hot as well...

Mine gets pretty warm, but I can still put my hand on it.
I noticed that the three posters that experienced the heat issue had new cameras, while the one without an older one. Could this be connected to the audio board?
Or are the "old guys" just used to the heat?

The inside temperature gets to about 65 degrees celcius, so yes , also mine gets pretty hot on top, almost too hard to touch. Low number (458)

When I saw the thread title I thought a RED had been stolen.
Whew.
I'm curious about this - nearly too hot to touch seems strange.

From what I understand the top of the camera is where the heat sinks for the electronics is located, and where we place cooling packs when shooting in warm weather, so it makes sense that it is where the most heat gathers.

Is there a way to see the exact temp in the menus? I have just seen the overheat warning.

Not in build 16, I'm not sure if 17 has that feature or not.

They haven't put anything beyond the "Temp OK" and "Body Hot" warnings in the camera with regards to temperature.
The temperature of the top of the camera is normal. On a hot day - even with the fans on full blast - it will be hot enough to burn you. Part of that is the heat the camera creates and part of it is the "black box in the sun" part of the equation.
Generally we'll put a diaper or something similar on the smart side of the camera to keep it from burning the operator's face on nasty hot days. Keep a space blanket over the camera and put up shade whenever possible.
As for telling the temperature of the camera, you'll eventually learn to tell how dangerous it is based on the temperature of the camera body. I can put my fingers on the top of the camera and know how safe or unsafe it is... and how close it is to overheating at its given temperature.
