I will be posting info for both EPIC and Scarlet here on "locked threads"... which means you will be locked out from responding. It allows me to make several posts, with pictures, and provide info in an orderly fashion.

Please begin your discussions of our announcements on the EPIC forum or Scarletuser.

Info will also be posted on www.red.com.

Thanks for your patience and support.

It's a good idea to post the info in locked threads, so we don't have to sift through hundreds of pages to get to the good stuff.

Just to be clear, the info for Scarlet will be posted in the Recon section of REDuser? Or will you make a locked thread over at ScarletUser as well?

Can't wait!

Im not breaking a NDA by repeating what I've heard:).... that it is a NIKE commercial with a director well known for trying new techniques.
Some/all cameras will be synchnonised and it is a fairly short post production period before it airs.

Do you think this might be a clue:
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/TECH/11/06/hologram.yellin/index.html
Or maybe it's for one of those "3-D frozen time" things but with a much longer duration, since you could just let all the cameras free-run for 6 minutes.

Thanks Jim but Jarred already told me

Lee Jay
11-09-2008, 07:19 AM
does this mean that DSMC and Scarlet have been rolled into one product?

Didn't Scarlet have something like a 2/3" sensor? Obviously, that would make it highly non-competitive in the dSLR space. If it now has a full-frame sensor, wouldn't that make it far more expensive than Scarlet was supposed to be?

David Rasberry
11-09-2008, 08:24 AM
I think there will be a choice of sensor sizes/lens mounts in a completely modular system. 2/3" has advantages for a compact motion picture camera with a high performance broad ranged zoom lens at a modest price for many kinds of shooting, especially documentaries.
35mm doesn't work well because the necessary optics get too big, heavy and expensive.

Lee Jay
11-09-2008, 08:26 AM

Then how can Scarlet and the DSMC be the same product? If you're assuming it's all by modularity, then trading out the sensor, processing and lens system (remember, Scarlet was supposed to be fixed-lens) pretty much means a whole new product.

David Rasberry
11-09-2008, 08:45 AM
I speculate "Scarlet" will be a processor/ control block with a certain level of processing power. "Epic" will be a much more powerful and expensive processor. There will be a choice of optical blocks for both with options for sensor size and lens mount. A build it the way you want it approach. My suggested list of optical blocks for Scarlet would be:

1. 2/3" sensor with fixed lens as original Scarlet

2. 4/3" standard sensor and micro 4/3 standard bayonet mount for interchangeable lenses.

3. s35mm sensor with PL mount

4. Full frame 35mm sensor with choice of still camera lens mounts.

For Scarlet/ DSMC you would trade off high speed frame rates for larger sensor size. Up to 180fps on 2/3" down to 24fps or 30fps max on the full frame 35mm, unless you crop for higher frame rates like Red One does. For large sensor and high fps you will need Epic level processor.

Lee Jay
11-09-2008, 09:14 AM
So, that would mean Epic wouldn't matter to anyone shooting at 24 or 30fps, since they could get Scarlet/DSMC with a large sensor for probably 1/10th the price. Or, perhaps, the difference is just pixel count between Scarlet/DSMC with the larger sensors and Epic.

I'm not really buying all of that.

MadamImAdam
11-09-2008, 02:22 PM
The difference is that Epic will be a 3D camera.

This has been the plan all along. Why do you think the Red One is called the Red "One"?

Although Epic owners will derisively refer to the Red One as "Cyclops." Get used to it.

Oh, and Scarlet will have only one dimension. There's no lens at all. You have to...well, it's complicated. Jim will explain it.

So, that would mean Epic wouldn't matter to anyone shooting at 24 or 30fps, since they could get Scarlet/DSMC with a large sensor for probably 1/10th the price.Even if David is right, no one said the sensor blocks were all the same price. But I have my doubts too. All this modularity and choice may be good, but it can only drive prices up and well-heeled point-and-shooters away.

True, just because you may be able to build it your way doesn't necessarily mean you can afford it your way. I hope there are reasonable options within the $3-4k range. To be fair, Scarlet was never pegged as a sub $2k camera aimed at the consumer market. If a few hundred bucks extra at the low end of the range buys access to a world of future upgrades, I think the tradeoff is worth it.

Mike Bozulich
11-10-2008, 04:50 PM
Any chance of an early info release if everything is in place and ready to go? I mean why wait for an arbitrary date if all your ducks are in a row? I doubt anyone here would complain. :)

Lawrence Bansbach
11-11-2008, 07:27 AM
To be fair, Scarlet was never pegged as a sub $2k camera aimed at the consumer market.I agree. I always thought that the whole soccer-mom thing was pretty silly and that Scarlet was targeted at professionals. But given the sub-$3,000 pricetag for the original Scarlet and moderate advertising (in photography, film/filmmaking, and maybe even computer and home video gear mags), there might be sufficient awareness and interest among the general public to sell a few thousand units to the more affluent, or at least those with more discretionary income. I may be wrong (I usually am), but the higher the cost and the more complex the purchase decision -- and therefore the more knowledgeable the buyer must be -- the greater the chance of losing this segment of potential buyers.

Hi I'm new to the RED forum, have been following up and saving up for my very own RED here in Beirut. I'm looking forward to the 13th, but think its terrific that REDones are available at once.

I run a very small super8 facility, and the goal is to give ppl a small gauge image on film that they can blowup for hamstring prices. It seems to be working so far, I take off in January, am building a small telecine rig and am trying to figure out how to capture the aerial image on a RED sensor, if anyone has any idea on the adjustments that have to be made to condenser lenses and capture computers would be great to chat.

If I can get scarlet to work as a capture device, then students can shoot in Super8mm and have 3K files for hopefully under the price a full HD camera hires per day (over 600 dollars in Lebanon).

Apparently someone here owns a RED one and is renting it at exorbitantly high prices, dunno how ppl feel about that since RED is not about extra cash...

Mr. Jannard, hats off.

Question on ordering, is it still wire transfer to an account until i hit the price? ie can i make a deposit and keep adding to my credit?
