View Full Version : How is build 17 stability in post workflow?

Just wondering how build 17 is working in post. I know that the build is pretty solid on the camera side, no crashing or locking up from what I hear. But what about post side in FCP, Avid, Redcine, Redrushes, RedAlert, Scratch, Nucoda? Is realtime playback in 2k back in Scratch with the latest build 17 release? I have a shoot coming up in the next couple of weeks. Want to know if making the jump will be "safe". Thanks!

Works well with all the Red Tools. What is your intended workflow? Creating dailies is no problem.

I've heard specifically with Scratch that with certain builds, the realtime capability was broken. Just wanted to make sure if I did indeed go to a post house to work on Scratch for final CC if it would play out in realtime 2k.

With MAX mode enabled, Scratch cannot play back 4k 2:1 half high debayer in real time. With it disabled, it can.
The only time this is a problem is if you're planning on playing out to tape as Scratch will drop frames. If you're rendering out to DPX or whatever, then it's nearly inconsequential, only affecting interface playback which still is realtime at quarter debayer, and near-realtime at half.
Also, remember that only very few Scratch systems are capable of playing back redcode in realtime in any case - there's systems from BOXX, Globalstore, and Silverado - and they're all octo-core skulltrail systems.
I have seen MAX and non-MAX mode images from build 17, and I can't find any reduction in quality by eye on close inspection, but it's just my eye, and I make no claim to know what the differences between these modes really are.
My suggestions is, if you're going to Scratch and need realtime playback, disable MAX mode.
If you are looking for Scratch places experienced with Red footage, let me know.
cheers,

What exactly does Max mode do?

What exactly does Max mode do?
Its a slightly more complex encode that maximizes image quality, which means it takes slightly longer to decode in Scratch etc.
Its best to leave MAX enabled if you can, but sometimes you need real time .R3D decode via Scratch etc.
