Ok, I know they are trying their best. I know things are "subject to change" but I am now losing money because I don't have a drive. when I went to order my accessories I saw the it say back ordered. BEFORE ordering i asked about this. I was told they were going to be available by the time i finalized my order. Camera ships, email tells me "There is a chance that the RedDrive might now not be shipping with the first shipment because we have unfortunately just run out but we are expecting a big shipment of them
sometime this week." No it didn't ship. nor did it ship the next week. or the week after that. and now they are saying not for another two weeks. I waited 6 months for a camera like every one else. Its beautiful, but USELESS when i am limited to 5 minutes of video! I would have bought CF cards like crazy except that for the same money I would get 20 Minutes of video. NOT ENOuGH TO MAKE IT THROUGH A DAY! Now I am guaranteed to lose one job while another is forced to wait even longer! I have bills to pay. THIS IS MY JOB! I took a chance on Red and now am watching jobs go else where cause i can't record anything! Listen I know its a beautiful Camera. I know what they have done is a miracle. But when there is no drives whats the point! Rant over!
P.S. Please hurry up with the drives already!

Hey Canada,
You might want to check one of these out while you wait.

It got me through shoots before I received my drives.
They're quite reliable.

Thanks so much Brian. I was on the verge of doing this when a certain man from OZ saved me with a spare drive. The forum pulls through yet again! You should all be Very Proud of yourselves!

If you get the Nexto, I highly recommend getting the additional battery and car charger for it. Be sure to also install the latest FW.
Does the drive go INSIDE the Nexto back-up device? I hadn't heard of this device before, but it looks interesting.
Or does it do the same thing as plugging a CF card reader right into an external Hard Drive?

The Next has a CF reader and an internal HDD. When you insert the CF card, it performs a copy and verify. Its a way to off load the R3D onto the nexto and then re-use the CF while in the field.
It takes about 12-minutes to backup and verify an 8 GB CF card. I have been using it with two CF cards, but four would be best in order to not stop shooting. I have held off buying CF cards until the 16 GBs are available.

I wonder who that man was...
Happy to help, Ian. Hope it gets there on time.
Sounds like the biggest advantage is the check function. The speed doesn't seem THAT much faster than a FW800 CF card reader plugged into an external Lacie drive. But I like that it's all one unit and that it does provide a data verification step.
This unit also has an internal battery, I see. I like the sounds of that.

Ask around before slamming. The (RED) guys are under massive strain to keep up with demand. Yes, you thought it would ship with the order. Sh1t happens, it didn't. This forum is filled with an amazing mix of people willing to help other users in a bind. It all goes to creating the rapidly developing global RED family. You found out in time but also best to try and understand that the handful of (RED) guys are doing at the factory what other companies with many tens of thousands of employees are failing to do......food for thought.
Cheers,
Mark.

Mark, I know. I was also trying to purchase or rent one through the forum. believe me, I didn't just go off on here without trying other avenues. At the time it didn't seem like anyone was interested in helping out. As for RED I got an apology from my rep soon after posting this and was sure to email him back to make sure that they knew i didn't blame RED, It is their suppliers that need to be taking the heat. This post is exactly what it says. A rant. Frustration boiling over. Thats all. I was just venting which is what this very section is for. I was also very fortunate Pawel was willing to sell me his drive as no one else even contacted me. I know the people on this forum are amazing. But he was the only one to step up in this instance. And at the time of this post he didn't sound all that convinced that he would sell it. So I believe that I had a right to complain. Just as I now have the right to rejoice. Red has done amazing things. i just wish their suppliers would live up to that. Oh, and no offense meant to you. Just stating my case. I understand what your saying though.
Ian
P.S. might want to avoid putting RED in as (RED) two different companies:)

Kudos to Pawel for hooking you up. There are good people out there looking out for each other. You will have a blast shooting with the drive. By the way, shot the other night at a techno show with the drive (handheld) using Element Technica's drive mount and not a single dropped frame. Some serious bass happening, so these mounts really do work wonders. If you can, pick one up. If not, just make sure to secure the drive properly and when shooting anything with heavy vibration seek alternate methods of mounting.

I have my camera and bought travel tickets for a shoot which we held off for the camera. At first the drives were supposed to ship with the camera but now we have no clue when they will ship.
I wish I could rant too...

well, I don't know where to start. I just got my camera without any drive. How can I use this camera if I can't record anything. This is crazy to sell camera and without having drive and they are back order for weeks. How about to make enough drives and than sell camera! Not to mention customer service is close to non existent. Without good support and customer service RED is nothing. Please don't tell me I can shoot on that small memory cards. We want to shoot a movie not just some test. Yes, I am very upset, after I paid lot of money.

If you want to rant, I am at my desk - 949.206.7908. We significantly ramped up camera production - to the point that people got their cameras three months earlier than expected. With that huge increase in camera production, yes, a few items could not be ramped up as quickly. We apologize for the brief backorder and are working on it as quickly as possible to get it resolved. Again, if you would like to rant or have constructive feedback on how to improve our customer support, give me a ring.
Thanks, BC
