Hi,

What is going to be the best workflow with timewarped sequences from Avid to say Avid DS.

I have a sequence that I did motion effects on, which I have promoted to timewarps. I would like to now use monkey extract to generate 1080 dpx files.

Using V10 DS can I bring in the EDL and DPX for nice an easy conform?

I'm guessing I can't? Any thoughts?

Export an AFE?

I don't think the AFE would then link to the DPX re-conformed files?

That's exactly what they will do in DS 10 :)

Really?? So using the RedRushes workflow with DNxHD qts and the ale, I do my cut with timewarps. I put out a 3600 EDL and conform the DPX using eerr Monkey? Then I don't use the edl that monkey gives me but use an afe from MC put that into DS and it will relink the DPX??????

How does this work? Is it better with cineXML? what would the workflow be?

Thanks

Max

Monkey Extract or cineXML doesn't matter. I personally like Redcine because it lets me see the material visually before rendering.

cineXML translates the Avid XML for rendering used footage to DPX in Redcine (Mac and PC)

Monkey Extract takes an EDL and renders used footage to DPX using RedAlert/REDline (Mac)

Double check with a DS operator about timewarps and AFE. I am just a Media Composer guy.

Ahh.... I am MC and DS, normally an AFE would be fine, only with RED it is never that simple?

I think the issue is how the DS would see the link to the DPX if the AFE is linked to the DNxHD. If you used the newly generated EDL after the DPX conform, has that still got the motion effects in it?

Where is Michael when you need him?????

Sipping Martinis?

I know for a fact that the XML contains the source in and out for the timewarp.
And it would be strange if the EDL for Monkey didn't contain the media duration as well.

We did this demo in the LA event last week. Edit with ALE/QT for offline. Create a pull list via the FilmScribe XML to get selects. Process XML output to either Monkey or cineXML. DPX files go to DS v10. Send AFE to DS - do a conform to alternate source (DPX directory), and conform.

Done.

Hi Michael,

Sounds amazing.... is the important thing to use XML into monkey or cineXML or would a 3600 edl do the job???

Thanks

You want to use the XML into Monkey (with CMX .xsl file) or directly into cineXML as FilmScribe goes through and pulls all the elements without you having to remove layers or effects to do so. It ensures you are getting all the frames needed to recreate the effect. EDL's are not that good at that stuff.

AFE can relink to DPX but you must ensure that the file there is no discrepancy between file names DPX is looking for and the DPX files. In DS V10 there is also a very good "folders as reels" option.

Correct, you can override the source in the DPX by using the "directory as source" instead.

Hmmm... OK.

I tried getting the XML from filmscribe and using the TestXLST to convert to a CMX edl without much luck. Here is what I did... I used filmscribe following the stepbystep (although having to go by the XML for RedCine) then I used the scan CMX 8 but when I put it into RMextract it can't find anything on TOD or edge.

Would it not work if I just used a normal EDL out of MC. I have it all on one layer and I have the clips with timewarps added afterwards the edit (and promoted motion effects)

Any ideas, thanks?

Thanks Max

From FilmScribe I also get Unable to find Key Number for.....

Is this something to do with the way I brought in the footage. I used RedRushes with an ALE???

That's just an annoying message. It doesn't matter for the Red workflow...

The next version removes legacy alerts from the XML export.

OK.

So I used a simple EDL CMX3600 and it all conformed back to DS ok with motion effects on it. I didn't use dissolves and I only had one track. But it is something at least!

The XML workflow is to create master XML from FilmScribe per the directions in the step by step guide. The master XML then gets converted to CMX. This is a pull list of all selects represented as an EDL. That file then goes into Monkey. Or you can take the master XML with no farther processing and use it in cineXML to create a pull list for REDCINE from which to create the DPX files.
