We need to create an HDCam SR 4:4:4 master from about an hour's worth of Red footage. There are no edits necessary; whatever is on the drive is going to tape in alphanumeric order by folder name.

Right now I am converting the footage into DPX files using Red Rushes.

Once complete, is there a way to get the DS to link to these DPX files without importing them? Is Red Rushes the way to go or should I have used Redcine?

DS can link to files but they'll have to be on fast enough storage (about 300Mb/sec) to play back in real time to the SR Deck. There might also be an issue as I'm not sure that the DPX import tool (where you apply LUTS, choose Lin or Log, etc) works on DPX files when they are linked rather than imported.

Our storage is U320 SCSI so that will be fine. How do I create the links though? ALE from Redrushes? EDL from Redcine? Other?

It's really easy, when you right-click in an Explorer window in DS you go to the folder with your dpx sequence in it, DS sees it as a single clip if the frame numbers are concurrent. Right click the clip and choose Link rather than Capture. Simple as that.

EDL from your offline to create the online, DPX files have all the metadata such as timecode embedded in them.

Your DS 4:4:4 sequence has to match the size of RED DPX files. Or I should rather put it this way, your DPX files from REDErushes will have to be rendered at 1920x1080 for DS play back in real time.

ALso, for DS to consider playing back the files in real time the files must be stored inside the storage area of your media drive or in a directory that's added to DS indexed storages. Otherwise it will link to files but not attempt to play back in real time.

Are you on 8.4 or 10?
