There are a lot of people freaking out about the fact that they can get a Scarlet with comparable/better specs than their Red One for half the price. I admit, my heart sank at first also.

I just wanted to point out that the although you can buy a Scarlet S35 "brain" for $7000, the very fact that it's modular will add on a bunch of extra costs. As far as I can tell, if you just buy the body, you will have to pay extra for:

-A rear LCD and controls
-Audio inputs and monitoring outputs
-A lens mount

These items are required just to get the camera up to the standard $17500 Red One body, which is still useless without batteries, lenses, etc.

I guess what I'm saying is, although I do agree that the Scarlet is better than the Red One for less money, the price difference might not be as dramatic as we're all assuming just from looking at the specs. Small consolation, I guess.

Thanks for the awesome announcement, Jim. I need to get out there and make some more money now.

If you're a Red One owner, with a $17,500 trade-in credit, the Epic's price is great.

It would be a better option to just get the Monstro sensor in my RED ONE for a nominal fee.

That would certainly be more in keeping with the addage that "obsolescence is obsolete."

Epic would still have advantages I'm sure. But for many of us, keeping the Red One a viable camera for a number of years, through upgrades, was certainly one of its selling points.

You can't stop progress though: cheaper, faster, smaller technology is around every corner. As soon as Scarlet and Epic are ready, technology will have advanced yet again. We can all chase our tails for the rest of our lives if we wanted.
