View Full Version : Epic to Epic Upgrade Path

Maybe it's too early to ask this, but will there be an upgrade path from Epic S35 to Epic FF35? Looking at the specs and delivery dates, it would nice to trade in my Red One for an Epic S35 and then upgrade that to 16-bit Monstro when that became available, rather than wait 6 months or so for the FF35 (assuming the upgrade price was in the ballbark of the price difference between the two models). Before all this amazing new modularity was introduced, Jim announced a free Monstro upgrade for all Epics. But that was back when there was only one Epic model, so I'm guessing it doesn't apply anymore?

I'm also wondering about this for the same reasons.

Can I trade in my Toyota Corolla for it's original value towards an Camry? And then once I can afford it, trade in that Camry at original value towards an Avalon?
No offense, but there are some pretty ballsy requests being thrown around today...

In case you misunderstood, I'm talking about upgrading the sensor and related electronics - something that is part of the designed modularity of the system - not trading in a camera body.

This is true. It's no ordinary camera company.

I am guessing no. Maybe they will give you an Epic S35 Mysterium X to Epic S35 Monstro, but not to what is essentially a different model (the FF35).
At least that is how I would interpret it, but I would certainly be happy to be wrong.

Just to clarify, I'm not asking them to give me anything. I'm asking to what degree will be internals be modular and upgradable. For instance, can a S35 morph into a FF35, or are there too many internal differences to make this cost effective.
On the other hand, a S35 Monstro would be pretty sweet... I don't think I'm the only one here who values the jump up to 13+ DR over the other improvements. I would bet that everyone who is looking at the Epic S35 will be wondering what the roadmap to Monstro looks like, whether we're talking S35 or FF35.

As I understand it, purchasing a new brain *IS* the upgrade. Instead of having to buy a whole new camera, now you just buy the new sensor/CPU module and drop it in the rest of your chain. Seems like an incredibly fair way to do it to me...

You could probably sell the old one to offset the cost of the new brain...
Just give your rig a brain transplant...
I'm assuming the brains come with covers of some sort to protect the sensors when the mount is removed?

I agree that it would be great to hear what the idea is for an upgrade path. I'd love to get the Epic immediately and then upgrade it all the way to Epic 645 when time comes.
Considering recent circumstances I think it's a fair question to ask.
I'd like to know what the costs are so I can evaluate to wait for it or jump on the wagon asap. I will most probably do so no matter what the costs are as long as I'm assured I can upgrade without to much hassle.

It's fair enough if that's the case. I'm sure Jim will clarify these details after he answers the other thousand questions that have popped up in the last day.

It's a pretty fair question to ask, considering that Jim DID say that we will eventually be able to upgrade the Epic from the Mysterium-X sensor to the Monstro. I doesn't bother me whatever the answer is, and I'm not asking for anything. I'd just like to know the answer because it will affect buying decisions down the road.

Oh, I see. I would guess that it isn't cost effective to do things that way because of different processors and circuit controls as well as whatever they did for heat dissipation. I would think if you wanted FF you would have to buy the FF module.

I'm starting to think you're right, but of course it's all speculation until we hear from Jim and the gang. It looks like there's another thread that got transfered over here that explores the same issues.

The Red brouchure says you can simply add a larger format sensor....

The brochure mentions adding a larger format sensor it, I believe it means a new brain. Jim mentioned today that R1 was the only camera that you could actually replace sensor itself...cause that was always the idea but with the new program, it looks as though we have modulated the sensor to a brain. Am I correct?

The upgrade path is put your S35mm brain on ebay and then buy a FF35.

I fuckin hope not!!!
That means your RedOne +$11K = $28K (Epic S35) for 6 months until a $35K (Epic FF35) come along. I'd lose $10K-15K in 6 months...yeah right!!

If you can wait 6 months for FF35 Epic then why bother with S35....R1 can tie you over imo. I think RED will deliver which the camera 1st the people want the most, and if thats they case...FF35 seems to be the popular choice imo.

A RED ONE owner has several choices.
1. A RED ONE owner can keep the RED ONE and upgrade to the Mysterium-X sensor for a TBD price... just as we promised.
2. A RED ONE owner can purchase any EPIC and trade in their RED ONE for full $17,500 value towards the purchase... just as we promised.
3. A RED ONE owner can choose to keep their RED ONE and receive a one-time credit of 12% on a Scarlet system purchase.
Once any of the above has been chosen, the serial number will be marked as "Executed". It can not be used again for #2 or #3. It can, however, always be eligible for another sensor upgrade as we release new sensor technology in the future.
From memory Jim has always made offers like the upgrade path on his own back and not because people have asked for it...
This is not the way to return the respect.

So you just bought an 8 core PC and know that badass 16 core is announced to be out in 6 months. Do you tell intel or whoever fuck no, i need a free or at cost upgrade? fuck no.
That's plain irrational. If you took that argument to a court you'd be laughed out because know ahead of time which models are coming out and when.
