Hi there.
First and foremost, let me congratulate you on your product announcement and your bold step into the digital MF arena.I thing it’s a perfect solution making the 645 compatible with the Mamiya lens system, there’s a surplus of great lenses out there, and Mamiya’s own hassy-adapter will work great on v-lenses allowing even more lens options (real Ziess, not that Cosina-made ZF stuff) for still (and moving) images.
I’ve been holding out on a Phase back system to see what RED would come out with that might just meet my still needs.
However, now that the specs have come out, although duly impressed with the systems, I’m a tad uncertain of some things and I’m still trying to compare the scarlet FF to a MF digital system.
My R1 is more than enough for my moving images needs, so I’m not looking to get an epic anytime soon, (plus I couldn’t afford the one I want if I did) but obviously not enough for still photography and especially for what I’m looking to do, being products and fashion and the occasional pano landscape and QT VR- shots.
Especially when shooting landscapes and macro I’ve often thought that the &%¤# mirrors in SLRs were just in the way of getting steady shots – thinking that mirror lockup/shutter-only were irritating time-consuming solutions.
Hasselblad and Mamiya are locked into their own systems and have therefore not gotten rid of the mirrors in other than special-purpose cameras that typically are incompatible with. Enter RED :) !!!! …and WOW!!! Look mom, no mirrors super steady shots and 1080p “live-view”!
However, I can’t seem to figure it out, I might be a little slow, but I’d like to know how some things work. So when all comes to all here are a set of questions:
1) What are the effects of an electronic shutter system on still images? Are they virtually identical to those made with a mechanical shutter? Are shutters and mirrors unnecessary things of the past?
2) Are there any specs on shutter speeds for the Scarlet, is that something determined by software?
3) Native ISO of the FF35 chip?
4) Jim, what Photo-applications did you have in mind when you were inspired to design the Scarlet? (Edit: I see the electronic lenses have af)
5) Regarding the smaller Scarlets with the 2/3 chips – why isn’t there an PL-option? Just thought of all the great S16 lenses out there – buyers would be able to get great glass on the cheap. Isn’t S16 and 2/3 more or less the same, sizewise?
6) Flash sync and TTL metering? …Not that you’ve stated otherwise, would be great that the I/O module had a flash sync output.
7) And a more general question. Could one imagine that there might be some sort of lens correction software like Capture One or DxO, so the lenses become a more integrated part of the system? Running a script on a series of RAWs in Photoshop isn't exactly something that I want to learn how to do.
Last but not least, as far as the hardware upgrade (sound module, change of screws etc) do you guys have any date as to when you’re ready at the R1 at the Pinewood Studios? My serial number is 224 - Just trying to plan ahead, that’s all.
And let me also say that i have never, in my life experienced a company so dedicated to their customers - the trade-in deal is just amazing, simply amazing!
Cheers
