Should RED be like Sony and limit features on Scarlet to protect R1 and Epic?

No... I want to feel special with the baddest Epic I can afford. The more Scarlet users the better.

I was thinking the same thing until Jim pointed out how R1 will have more professional i/o choices than a basic Scarlet.

Given the excitement it is easy to think the R1 needs help, but it should do just fine between the Scarlet and Epic for some time.

P.S. Or else they can be donated to a local museum/film school. ;)

Or me. I'll take one. Two even. For free of course.

And I don't see anything wrong with Red having different tiers of cameras, otherwise all they would make would be the FF35 Epic and that would cut out a lot of potential customers. That would make them more like Arri. So which would you prefer in a world where you have to pay for the product out of your own pocket, Arri or Sony?

Maybe RED should open a movie production company like a SonyPictures/Columbia/Tristar.

Hi,

Why? to loose all the profits they make on building cameras!

Considering RED is NOTHING like ANY other company in existence.

I think RED should continue to do whatever they chose to (which they will) - not that my opinion means anything to this topic...

Red will build the best possible cameras they can. As they have always done. Red is built on creativity, ingenuity and vision not on politics and bureaucracy.

It's not a matter of holding back technology. I'm sure all new stuff RED can think of is put in the Epic camera. If RED make the Scarlet cam too good, all will trade in there R1 and it will be regarded old-stuff, and few will get Epic of the price. The only that benefit from this is new customers (late adopters) and this is exactly backward red philosophy of protecting early adopters and early R1 customers.

Should RED be like Sony and limit features on Scarlet to protect R1 and Epic?..shouldn't they be?

That is a very simplistic way of looking at it. It's like saying that Sony shouldn't make any camera other than the F35. No handycams, no DV, no HDV, no XDCAM, no Digibeta... Only the top camera.

The fact is that different users have different demands, and different budgets. By offering a range of products with different features, RED (and Sony) can offer products that suit many different users in both price and functionality.

Yes, it should - its a "stills photography" Full Frame 35 mm. :red_bandana:

As opposed to the F35 which is equal to a "motion picture" Super 35 mm - or S35 as we designate that.

sony bullied their customers by limiting technology by offering dv, hdv, xdcam and such...... all because they can...

red bulling their customers by limiting technology by codec (redcode 36,42,225) .... ... ....... mount systems ..... and format options (resolution) .... all because they can...

so tell me,
how hard it is to 'update' 2/3 scarlet to shoot 1080P and 2k,
how hard it is to 'update' S35 scarlet to shoot 1080P,3k,4k,4.5k ?
how hard it is to 'update' FF35 scarlet to shoot 1080P,2k,4k,4.5k,5k?

all red cameras should have all 'basic' format options...
all red cameras should have a 'basic' PL, Canon , Nikon mount
(no one is crying for mini-red,red,B4 or c, mounts)

People should only pay for the sensor real estate.... everything else (mounts, codec) should not be limited in any way...

i wish i could tell this in a more humble and soft way... but this is as 'humble' and most civilized way i guess..

It appears Redcode numbers are related to camera horsepower. Jim has said that scarlet has limited horsepower to keep power and heat under control.

there does not have to be something called scarlet or epic....

just RED 2K, RED 3K, RED ONE 4K, RED 4K (BRAIN) , RED 5K , RED 6K , RED 8.

ALL cameras "brains" are capable of shooting redcode 225, and all camera "brains" has a IMS mount (or PL,canon.nikon at least). All camera "brains" should physically looks the same or slightly bigger according to their sensor saiz and has the horsepower to process at least 2k in redcode 225.

customers just pay for the SENSOR and the ("proprietary") IMS mount...(or RED MOUNT that is interchangeable with PL,nikon and canon)

this is what should be called Obsolescence Obsolete..... which truly is...

(and skipping 2k is a BIG mistake)

I prefer a model based on sensor size than sensor resolution as it is more directly linked to different looks and you choose your camera based on the feel that you want to achieve.
Like the 28k sensor, I couldn't care less that it's 28k to be honest I'd just like to see the kind of images it's capable of producing.
