The camera system being used to shoot James Cameron's Avatar, which is a combination of 2 Sony 900's into one camera body, was developed by this company. Their website:

Really admire the industrial design that Vince Pace is pulling off with these cameras. LOVED the look/feel of the Advantage.
I believe they are actually Sony 950's ?

Gerz, I think you're right: either HDCams or HDCamSRs

Oh yeah, they are just rehoused Sony cameras but it goes to show that the box matters. The Cinealta products are way too ENG if you as me.

They are the T-block unit of the F950 rehoused into a handholdable camera body -- they still have to be cabled to a F950 body for image processing before getting cabled to an external recorder, usually HDCAM-SR.

Funny how what seemed interesting a year ago is now irrelevant.

Yeah, really. It ONLY shoots in 1080... :bleh:
Seriously, though, I can't wait to see what he has up his sleeve with Avatar. Cameron consistently deliveres well-crafted, highly entertaining films. Throw in digital 3D in there, and it should be pretty spectacular.
That said, I'm sure his next gig won't be shot on a Cinealta... :matrix:

Ready to pee my pants waiting for Avatar. We watch Terminator and Aliens on a monthly basis around these parts. :matrix:

No doubt the film will be awesome but I'm curious to see what it will really look like. Sony F900's? 3D is cool but I wonder how much of a video feel it will have? Hmmm...

F950's, not F900's.

Is there even any live action stuff in the picture? I thought it was motion capture. I can't imagine he would shoot stuff for the bigscreen in 1080... it's too low-res. Then again maybe there were no other options for 3D when he started making it.
Also, isn't Cameron a RED reservation holder?

He shot "Ghosts of the Abyss" for IMAX 3D using twin F950's. He definitely thinks 1080P is good enough for cinema release. Also, with 3D you have two images overlaid though slightly offset, this tends to compensate somewhat for starting out with only 1080P -- I saw "Ghosts of the Abyss" in IMAX and it wasn't bad, sharpness-wise, because your eyeballs are somewhat twisted around with the 3D.

OK this is just the fanboy in me but how bout "R3D" Red 3D. It may not be a reality (yet) but it's almost too good a marketing angle to pass up.
DISSCLAIMER (I do not have any info that this product is in development or even consideration by the Red team) But man that would be cool. 4K-3D it would probably cause a bunch of detached retinas but HOW COOL! I remember watching Captain EO at Disneyland (Did I just date myself or what?) but despite MJs awful antics I just loved the 3D sci-fi teatment and the polarized glasses were very easy to see through and had none of the tunnel vision the 3D Imaxes have. I can't wait for Avatar or Battle Angel either but we'll just have to. At least I get to make a few of my own Sci-fi flicks on Red in the mean time:weight_lift:
