Hey, now with Epic and Scarlet coming out and with the RED One being freely available for purchase, what do you guys think the impact will be on the sale of used RED Ones? Hunter has his up right now for $16,500, pretty tempting I must say, even if it's just the camera and CF module. Obviously the days of high premiums for used RED Ones are over now, so what do you guys estimate will happen? If I could buy a RED for even $15,000, I may very well take it but I don't know if they'll get that low. Lots of change going on right now.

who knows, but it would make sense to me that those interested in EPIC will still buy RED ONES, most others will wait for Scarlet and rent RED ONEs in the mean time.

While we still don't know how much a "shooting" Scarlet will actually cost, it's safe to assume that as soon as you can buy a Scarlet, a RED ONE will no longer be worth $17,500.

but who knows, only time will tell.

oh they'll get even lower jack. count on it. the thinking that redones will hold their value because of a trade in for epic is flawed for these reasons
A. we're in a global recession and very few are going to be forking out 40grand for an epic camera
B. with less people buying epic, there will be less wait for one, thus making the purchase of an 'early numbered' redone to jump the line redundant
C. the redone is a piece of technology...and the price on that almost without fail drops
D. see reason A....many will sell their redones to survive, and if they need a camera, buy a scarlet and use their redone accessories

It's going to be interesting to see what kind of effect the $17,500 value of a Red One body on an Epic trade-in has. How many prospective buyers of Epic who do not have a Red One body to trade in will there be? How many used Red Ones will be available for sale? Those two numbers, I think, will largely determine the value of a Red One on the used market.

Hmm...at first, when Epic is in limited supply and only available to Red One owners, that could actually place a premium on Red Ones again. You'd want to buy a Red One just to get to the front of the line. (I don't know if you'd have to arrange the transaction to go through the original Red One owner or not, but it would all amount to the same thing. Someone salivating for an Epic will probably be willing to jump through plenty of hoops and pay a premium to get one fast.)

A win-win for everyone would start with a Red One owner who really isn't using the features that Scarlet S35 doesn't have. Once Scarlet S35 and Epic are available at the same time, he sells his Red One for more than $17,500 to an eager Epic buyer and buys Scarlet S35 at full price. He gets effectively more camera than he had before (because he wasn't using R1-only features anyway) with money left over to buy any necessary modules that he may not have already. The Epic buyer happily jumps to the front of the line, and Red sells a Scartlet S35 as well as an Epic with plenty of add-ons to this new-to-Red customer (I'm assuming Red's average Epic-package profit margin will be higher than $17,500 minus resale price of a certified refurbished Red One).

If Red even facilitated this kind of a deal by putting Epic buyers together with Red One sellers, it could quiet any Red One owner complaining that Scarlet S35 is as good/better than their Red One. If the owner really feels that way, he'd jump at the opportunity for this deal. If he doesn't take the deal, well, GFY.

Red digital cinema camera company needs to sell cameras. They are not going to limit the number of epics on the market because they've already figured out they're not going to sell nearly as many of them. They also know that they will race fairly quickly through the R1 owner numbers who will want to upgrade. And that's why they have the scarlet program. And it's also why they don't have an upgrade program for Scarlet. 'Cause everyone would trade their R1 cameras in for a Scarlet, and Red would be stuck with a bunch of old technology Redone's and no extra money in the bank. Not good for business.
There will not be a premium on a Redone ever again. I'd bet money on it (no, not 17.5k) but I just don't see how, unless demand for Epic is phenomenal. Which I also just can't see.
course, i might be blind as a mole too

when someone sells his red to get a scarlet he will be at the end of the line again:
because if you are a redowner you can choose to upgrade or take the deposit for scarlet.....not both at the same time.

It seems to me that rental houses would probably be willing to pay at least 17K for lower numbered Red Ones in order to cash them in for Epics. Is there anything prohibiting this?
