Hey all... amidst all this chaos, I am glad to report that the first of our RED PRIMES has just landed, the new 300mm T2.9... both Imperial and Metric.

Should be in the store on Monday... $5,950

Now we're talkin' !!!

So, what kind of production rate can we expect on these? Is it going to be similar to the 18-85? Or better (hopefully)? Lenses delivered in order of camera ship date? AFAIK, no pre-orders for this lens were ever taken...

Jarred Land
11-15-2008, 01:16 AM
it will be very similar to the 18-85 roll out at first.. we have about 40 imperial and a dozen metric in right now. Will go out in the order that the orders come in.

Any talk of reworking the 18-50 and/or 50-150 avails?
Lenses are crazy important.

Also, the new pamphlet talks of a "proprietary" RED-mount. Why not just go with a PL mount with the necessary copper ball-dent Idata/power/control pins so we can go between common s35 lenses and new Red FF 35 lenses without a mount change?
Just thinking!

just want to see it before it sits on my desk and then on my red ; )
really helps to look at the pics of the 18-85 while i wait
and when i get it hopefully i can have a pic of the 300 pro to look at while i wait for that.

Do you have lenses in the works that cover 35mm still full-frame? Normal still lenses aren't going to cut it on your new large sensors.

So who do I have to kill (or bribe) to get one of these shipped to me? My bomb squad rep isn't in today I guess. Talked to someone else, was told they added it to my orders and I'd have to wait for Brent to call me back or email me....

Sorry, I've just been trying to pre-order this lens since NAB, no one ever lets me... And with only a handful of them in stock at the moment, now that they're "available", I wasn't going to wait around for it to show up on the web store.

I guess I'll send Brent an email...

Nice photo, Jarred. Something must be wrong here as I can actually see the lens and this time the thing actually says 300mm on it (twice if you count the embossing). Such a departure in design.

So what size drop in filter in the back, or is there one at all? And what is the lens support deal? Just curious. Also want other standard specs like MOD, length front mount to front element and front diameter.

Can't tell for sure from the picture, but I'm not seeing any direct evidence for drop-in filters or a threaded receptacle for lens support.

I've ordered the lens, the price is good, I have no doubt the optics are good. However, the lack of the above features (especially integrated means for support) would be disappointing. I'm hopeful that there is still a means for drop-in filters -- there is a section of the lens, to the left of where the barrel enlarges for the iris ring in the above pic, that looks like a possibility.

As for lens support, if not integrated, then would I be correct to assume that it will be forthcoming just like the support for the 18-85? Could it even be the same support usable for both lenses?

I know... Lots of questions.

Mitch Gross
11-18-2008, 08:04 AM
I have to say that I'd e pretty sad to see two useful features eliminated in the move from a "less-professional" model to a "professional" model of the same device.

I got my 300mm today. It seems very nice, I like the action on it more then the 18-85 zoom. It does have a drop-in filter slot and come with a 43mm scew in clear filter. It does not have a threaded receptacle for lens support or any other way to support it.

I will post some frames from it tomorrow in the lens section if I figure out how to support it.

What 43mm filters are available?

Jeff Kilgroe
11-18-2008, 10:21 PM
Thanks for the confirmation on the drop-in filters and the teaser with it sitting next to the Cooke. :) Hopefully I'll get mine by the end of the week.

I believe Hoya made 43mm filters that work on the other 300mm RED lens. But I guess I'll have to start researching that myself now.

Jeff Kilgroe

Just got mine today.

Looks like pretty much any standard 43mm threaded filter will work in the drop-in tray.

I won't have a chance to work with the lens much until this evening. I'll see what the front threads are -- looks like 112mm to me at the moment.

Why is there no integrated means for attaching support??? WHY? WHY? WHY?

The mechanics are smoooooth, I love the size and feel of this lens so far.

Can someone confirm the front threads on the 300mm? I need to get a pola to thread on the front, seems to me it's 122mm, but I don't have the lens in front of me at the moment or a good way to measure it.

Would appreciate it if someone from RED or others who have the lens could confirm! Then I could pick up a the right size while I'm out and about today. :)

Jeff Kilgroe

Bueller?... Bueller?....

Well I checked the lens with some crappy calipers I had laying about. Looks like my original thought of 112mm was pretty good. No one in town has anything in stock larger than 98mm anyway, so I guess I'll order one in the morning. So if anyone can clarify within the next 10~12 hours or so if a standard 112mm threaded filter will fit the front of this lens, then I'd like to know. Otherwise, I guess I'll be the guinea pig..

UPDATE:

No response in 12 hours... Amidst the chirping crickets, I have transformed myself into a guinea pig and ordered one.

I'd like to see Red provide filters for all their lenses actually, since the 18-85 for example is a non-standard size. It's also give me comfort that I know the accessory works with the lens.

A clear UV/Protect filter would be a great start since I'm paranoid someone will damage the front element in a rental situation.

Cheers,

Paul

Schneider Optics makes the best drop inn 43 mm filters (made in Germany by Schneider optics GMBH). Because the filters are between the image sensor and rear optics of the lens, it is VERY important that such filter is ground parralell and introduces NO optical magnification. If it does, your lens back focus will be off and so will all your footage marks. The clear filter that comes with the lens is installed during the lens back focus and footage calibration. If you remove it and not replace it, your calibration will be off........
Go to www.schneideroptics.com for more information.

Folks, I just checked with Schneider Optics USA and they don't seem to carry it anymore,Schneider Kreuchnach (BW) does not show them either but check with them anyways. Tiffen makes a few 43 mm filters. Check with them and make sure that they guarranty flattness (parralel-izm). B&H also shows a few 43 mm filters - not sure if they are screw in or what. I have not dealt with these filters for a while-everything changes.......

The B+W filters are too thick to fit in the original Red 300mm, not sure about the new lens.

Jeff Kilgroe

Should've had my filters today... But FedEx hosed me. I guess I'll get them friday now.

I agree with Camera Doctor's sentiments, but I know of several people using these Hoya filters with great results for the original RED 300mm. I'll see how they work out. I'm also in a bit of a time crunch, none of this info was available until I actually got the lens in my own hands. RED still has not posted or confirmed any specs. The Hoya filters are performance guaranteed. I went with a B+W pola for the front of the lens, I have always been pleased with with their filters. The Schneider pola was special order with about 5 to 10 days lead time, not accounting for the holiday weekend. The Schneider was also nearly $200 more. I'm still hoping that the filter will actually fit the front of the lens. I need all this because I will be running it without a mattebox next week on a shoot in the mountains. I'll need to bring as little kit with me as possible.

jonnycom
11-27-2008, 01:04 AM
Jeff what are you using for support? I am waiting for Jacek at Optitek to get his support out, soon I hope.

Jeff Kilgroe
11-27-2008, 11:01 AM
I made my own support. Not quite as elegant as Jacek's one for the 18-85, but functional. Actually it's a piece of 3/8" aluminum that I bent to cradle the lens and I glued a strip of neoprene on the inside of it. I tack-welded a 3/8"-16 nut on the bottom of the aluminum cradle so I can run a a bolt up through a universal mount into the the nut and support it / the lens.

I'm interested to see what Jacek comes up with, I'm assuming it will be similar to the 18-85 support he's made. My support will work for now and I would trust it for most anything that isn't vehicle mounted.

Jeff Kilgroe
11-28-2008, 11:34 AM
Update...

Just got my 112mm filter for the front of this lens... Aside from B&H shipping me a filter that was obviously used by someone else previously and damaged :ranting2:, the thread size is wrong. 112mm is the appropriate diameter, but the threads on the front of the RED lens are a finer thread count than what comes on the B+W filter.

Anyway, gotta get this sorted ASAP... Otherwise I'll have to lug the mattebox and more filters with me and handle more gear.

Mitch Gross
11-28-2008, 06:33 PM
I have not seen the pro version of the 300 yet, but know that on some lenses what appear to be threads for attaching a filter are in fact threads that are part of the manufacturing process of the lens. It is quite possible that RED never intended to have any filter screw into the front of this lens.

Jeff Kilgroe
11-28-2008, 09:00 PM
Good point, Mitch. I hope that's not the case. I have been so eager for a solution that I had not even contemplated that possibility.

Brian Ferguson

There is a filter tray at the back of the lens that carries a 43 mm clear filter. This filter has "Normal" stamped on it. You can change that for a 43 mm - Pitch 0.75 filter of your choice. Just remember that you always have to have a at least the original clear filter in place or your focus marks will be off. I have used ND's and Pola 43 mm filters on the 300 and it works great.

One thing to be careful of is the original 300 mm had a slightly narrow clearance for the filter frame, it seems less so on the new Pro 300. I had some Hoya brand 43 mm filters that I had to carefully sand down the front of the actual filter frame to get it to fit in the slot of the first series 300 mm. I just tried one of those filters in the Pro 300 and there wasn't a problem.

In my experience and advice of many rental houses it isn't a good idea to stick filters on the front of lenses much longer than 250 mm or so. It degrades the image much more than a filter in the back.

Brian Ferguson

This is the same that applies in Still Photography and the reason why none of the super telephoto have only a rear gelatin Drop in filter slot! Degradation of the image will be indid very apparent when you put a Customized filter threaded in the front of a lens like the 300mm, I know I have done this with a 200 IS 2.0L, 300 2.8L and the infamous sports fanatics marvel the 400mm 2.8L, when I didn't know better I wanted to put a filter in front in order to preserve the exposed lens, especially on lenses this expensive, I have an UV HAZE filter on all of my lenses, also because this is only when they truly become Weather resistant ( L series).

So no front threaded filter on lenses from 300mm and above. There many solutions including fairly inexpensive LEE filter systems which can be tighten on to any lens size.
